Era il 1991: l'anno di grandi capolavori della musica. I Nirvana pubblicavano "Nevermind", i My Bloody Valentine il loro "Loveless", i Primal Scream "Screamadelica" e i Massive Attack debuttavano con "Blue Lines". I Pixies salutavano i fan con il loro canto del cigno "Trompe Le Monde".
Dalle nebbie di Oxford esordivano questi misteriosi Swervedriver (nome bellissimo che significa qualcosa simile a "chi sbanda in curva") dalle sonorità cupe ma dalle chitarre usate come veri e propri colpi di rasoio. La voce cupa e malinconica, ma molto calda di Adi Newton, completava questo impasto di suoni e canzoni dalla vena di base molto pop, ma all'insegna di un feedback clamoroso, ma forse più educato dei primi Jesus And Mary Chain. Brani come "Son Of Mustang Ford", "Sandblasted", "Rave Down", "Lead Me Where You Dare" e "Pile Up" hanno rivoluzionato l'era del pop inglese insieme alle opere di compagni d'avventura come Loop, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine e Pale Saints, spesso stagemates dei nostri.
"Raise" è stato un disco davvero rivoluzionario!!! Abrasivo quanto basta, ma diretto al cuore!
