Appartenenti alla miriade di band del così detto filone "post grunge", i Tantric vantano un buon successo negli Stati Uniti (soprattutto con il primo omonimo album del 2001 che vendette più di 1 milione di copie) ma sono praticamente sconosciuti dalle nostre parti. Ed è un peccato, perchè la loro proposta non è per niente male e risulta in questo album più che mai omogenea e appetibile."The End Begins" viene pubblicato nel 2007, è l'album meno venduto della band ma a mio parere anche il migliore. Tutto in questo platter è al posto giusto, le abilità tecniche si sposano al meglio con la calda voce di Hugo Ferreira, ma a fare la differenza è la presenza di un violino elettrico che dona al lavoro grande originalità.
L'apertura è affidata a "Regret", bel brano con una sezione ritmica curatissima arricchito da un buon assolo nel finale; "Down And Out" è aperta da un riff di violino che alternato a quello di chitarra crea un groove davvero accattivante; poche note di pianoforte introducono poi "The One" che vede la partecipazione di Kevin Martin dei Candlebox, una canzone solare ma mai come la successiva "Love Song" portatrice di uno di quei ritornelli che si stampano in testa e non vanno più via. A seguiire "Wishling" e "Something Better", due modern ballad di buona fattura accompagnate dall'immancabile violino. Dopo la troppo "nickelbackiana" "Lucky One", introdotta da un bel giro di basso arriva la title track che grazie alle ottime linee di violino crea una atmosfera vagamente malinconica ; i tre pezzi conclusivi ,"Monopoly" ,"Why Don't You" e "Lay", nè sfigurano nè esaltano quanto di buono già ascoltato mantendendo su buoni standard il lavoro della band.
Se state cercando qualcosa di orecchiabile ma allo stesso tempo di particolare e moderno, procuratevi questo "The End Begins", un album che riesce a distinguersi nall'affollato mainstream americano.
