La California non è solo starlette da telefilm da day-time, squillo d'alto borgo, super produzioni cinematografiche, pomposità e altri mille luoghi comuni. California sta anche per culla e patria della buona musica. Fu proprio in questo Stato così distante dal grigiore di New York, a dare i natali a due generi fondamentali come l'hardcore punk e il thrash metal della Bay Area.
Per sfogarsi e riempire le proprie giornate, fu così che nei primissimi anni '80 ragazzi della middle-class come Milo Auckerman, Jello Biafra e Henry Rollins presero le chitarre e iniziarono a suonare quasi per gioco, riuscendo a rappresentare e raffigurare anche con i loro testi una società più o meno malata.
Fu proprio infatti dai vari Dead Kennedys, Black Flag e company, che pochi anni dopo vede nascere e svilupparsi, grazie a gente come Metallica, il thrash metal e un nugolo di band provenienti dai dintorni di San Francisco che cominciarono a velocizzare ed estremizzare il classico sound Maiden-iano.
E così arriviamo ai Testament. Si formano nel 1983 sotto il monicker The Legacy, ma successivamente per diversi problemi viene cambiato poco dopo nell'attuale. Dopo un primo demo, danno alla stampe il primo full-lenght "The Legacy" e un anno più tardi, era il 1988, questa bomba di puro thrash metal che va sotto il nome di "The New Order".
A nessuno piace arrivare secondi. I perdenti di successo non sono mai piaciuti a nessuno. Ma poco importa se il Testamento non fa parte della triade di ferro Metallica-Slayer-Megadeth e poco importa se non ha inventato il genere. Come direbbero in molti: facile dire di essere un thrashers e poi conoscere giusto i Metallica e qualche canzone di Mustaine e soci. Ecco il gruppo di Billy e soci rientra in quel piccolo novero di band dello stile musicale precedentemente esposto da cui ogni buon cultore del genere che si dichiara tale non può non conoscere e non ascoltare.
Solo sfiorati dal successo dei 'Tallica, i quattro di San Francisco hanno decisamente un attitudine decisamente valida e che quasi chiunque può confermare. Adesso parliamo del disco.
Ecco la sintesi del platter: batteria a mille senza interruzioni per tutta la durata del disco, chitarre taglienti in grande spolvero, basso volentieri in evidenza e il carisma da capo tribù del nativo americano sig. Chuck Billy dietro il microfono. Il gruppo con cui si possono trovare i maggiori punti di contatto in quanto ad aggressività e stile vocale sono senza dubbio gli Slayer, annata 1986. Per dirla tutta ci avviciniamo molto ad Araya e soci, piuttosto che ai più melodici Metallica e Megadeth. Indi per cui dimenticatevi le ballate di metà disco e i tempi lenti.
Un'atmosfera inquietante, temporale e tuoni, chitarre acustiche un inizio che fa molto "Raining in blood" fa da intro all'opener "Eerie Inhabitans" su cui fa capo un ritornello semplice.
A livelli da orgasmo però si arriva con i successivi tre pezzi. La velocissima title-track che non ti dà un attimo di respiro nemmeno sul corto refrain. E poi signori arrivano due capolavori in fila, due gemme di thrash con la doppia H: la spettacolare "Trial By Fire" uno dei migliori pezzi dei Testament di sempre che si apre con un delicato arpeggio e un piccolo assolo pulito a cui successivamente si aggiunge un ottimo giro di basso raffinato di Christian che sovrasta le chitarre, prima che Chuck prenda il comando delle operazioni e faccia letteralmente esplodere la track.
Ma il pezzo più violento del disco, solo 2 minuti e 46 secondi, risulta essere la sorprendente "Into The Pit" che dimostra che quando i Testament si ci mettono in quanto a ferocia non sono secondi nemmeno agli Slayer. Quest'ultimo è il perfetto esempio di canzone del genere e personalmente come vorrei fosse ogni canzone del gruppo. Ovvero niente galateo, niente buone maniere, niente avvisi e troppe attenzioni, solo adrenalina pura. Quest'ultima sembra voler riprendere il discorso della splendida e furiosa "Over The Wall" per il sottoscritto forse la più bella thrash song di sempre.
Sulla stesso piano c'è pure la scoppiata e incazzata "Disciples Of The Watch". Le due strumentali invece dimostrano la gran classe dei due axemen Peterson e Skolnick evocando atmosfere magiche e fatate in cui vengono adoperate le acustiche e utili pure per dare un attimo di respiro. Apprezzabili gli intrecci delle due sei corde, ma con tutta la simpatia che posso avere verso Billy e soci, una certa costellazione in lontananza continua ancora a splendere di luce propria e regnare in maniera incontrastata (cit. Orion).
Peccato che qualche pezzo vedi "A Day Of Reckoning" e "The Preacher" siano sottotono. Mentre tutto sommato è buona la cover degli Aerosmith "Nobody's Fault" che segna l'unico cambiamento stilistico sul disco, visto che si tratta di un roccioso pezzo hard-rock in cui cala l'intensità ritmica.
Se si vuole ascoltare un disco carico di pathos e pura energia o semplicemente approfondire il gruppo con uno dei suoi dischi principe "The New Order" risulta essere altamente consigliato a metallari e non.
