La Allman Brothers Band è uno di quei gruppi provenienti dall'America che è riuscita ad imporsi nelle scene del blues rock mondiali come una delle più importanti. Questi sei ragazzi provenienti dal Macon (Georgia) hanno letteralmente dato il via al tanto amato e nello stesso tempo odiato genere Southern Rock, spaziando comunque tra vari generi quali rock, soul, honky-tonk e country.
I primi lavori della ABB hanno un sound fantastico, influenzato dalla pazzia dei mitici anni '70, racchiudendo tutto ciò che il clima e la cultura di quegli anni poteva offrire: un blues psichedelico, quasi progressivo che spesso esplodeva in sfrenate ed incontrollate improvvisazioni di chitarra, dietro le quali sedevano i fratelli Duane e Gregg Allman. Basti ascoltare il fantastico Live At Fillmore East per rendersi conto della frenetica tecnica e passione dei musicisti.
"Brothers And Sisters" è il disco che segnò una leggera inclinazione del sound della band, poiché fu il primo vero e proprio disco che fu registrato dopo morte della marcante figura del chitarrista Duane. Troviamo alle chitarre soliste, accanto a Gregg Allman, il chitarrista Dickey Betts, che prima si occupava solo delle parti ritmiche: egli trasforma il sound in un genere che si potrebbe definire in modo azzardato come coutry-souhern-rock, con un tocco di sano blues.
Lo stile differente è riconoscibile già da "Wasted Words" contraddistinta dall'atmosfera raggiante e radiosa del southern rock, e i cui passaggi intersecati di chitarra e tastiera rendono storico il pezzo. Si passa poi al pezzo "Ramblin' Man" deliziosamente country e con quel fascino di chitarra che le imprime il marchio indelebile del sound della Allman Brothers Band. Ad introdurre il pezzo successivo è il grande Chuck Leavell, che in seguito fonderà i misconosciuti ma apprezzabilissimi Sea Level che sono anche loro southern con pazze digressioni caraibiche e psichedeliche. Quest'ultimo genere è distinguibile anche in questo pezzo, e l'assolo di piano è formidabile.
In ogni album degli ABB che si rispetti è presente una canzone blues, ma proprio blues blues: "Jelly Jelly" è lenta e tirata, lagnosa ma allo stesso tempo potente; l'assolo di organo e successivamente di pianoforte incantano colui che sta di fronte allo stereo. Ritmi cadenzati e atmosfere movimentate sono la formula di "Southbound", il cui cantato si intreccia bene con chitarra e pianoforte. Ospite in "Jessica" invece è il cantautore sudista Les Dudek, che insieme a Dickey Betts e Gregg Allman formano il trio chitarristico perfetto per questa canzone perfetta: difatti "Jessica" è uno dei pezzi più famosi e più belli in assoluto, basti pensare alle geniali digressioni di chitarra, che sembra cantare dall'inizio alla fine del pezzo. "Pony Boy": una cavalcata country all'insegna del buon umore, che sa portarti nelle Grandi Pianure del XIX secolo, con la sola compagnia di un cavallo e di una bottiglia di whisky.
"Brothers And Sisters" è dunque un tipico disco a stelle e striscie, ma per la grandezza dell'opera ha un solo difetto: dura troppo poco!!
