...ovvero: se il mondo fosse migliore, questo disco avrebbe dovuto essere in testa a tutte le classifiche al posto di tanta altra fuffa che viene invece propinata dalla major di turno. Gli Avalanches sono australiani e sono un collettivo di 6 djs dalle influenze disparate, che sono riusciti nell'anno 2000 a produrre questo piccolo, e purtroppo sottovalutato, prodigio chiamato "Since I Left You". Lo definisco prodigio perché è interamente basato su samples (badate bene, ciò che spacca è che sono chiaramente riconoscibili) ma riesce a essere veramente organico e completo più di tanti altri dischi "suonati". Mi sto ancora chiedendo come siano riusciti, a partire dai campioni più improbabili, a mettere insieme quello che considero forse il perfetto esempio di "pop" moderno, un disco non facilissimo ma che si ascolta tutto d'un fiato ed è capace di far tornare il sorriso sulle labbra anche dopo la peggiore delle giornate.
I campioni usati sono tutti citati all'interno del disco (tra l'altro, bellissimo packaging...) e vanno da "Holiday" di Madonna (!) a Kid Creole & The Coconuts, da Peter Gabriel ai Cure, per citare i più clamorosi e inaspettati, e sono tutti orgogliosamente non ripuliti dal fruscio del vinile e amalgamati con passione quasi commovente.
Caratteristica fondamentale degli Avalanches che me li fa ammirare incondizionatamente è quella di saper non prendersi sul serio senza però scadere nel demenziale e nell'eccessivo, riuscendo a comporre piccoli capolavori come "Extra Kings" (che suona come gli Air a cui all'improvviso sale un acido particolarmente buono ma di breve durata, con successivo down...), "A Different Feeling" (il miglior pezzo dei Daft Punk non scritto dai Daft Punk), "Electricity" (una micro sinfonia electro, colonna sonora ideale per un film che parla di una storia d'amore ambientata nel 2100), "Tonight May I Have To Last Me All My Life" (che riporta alle fumose atmosfere da jazz club anni '30), "Frontier Psychiatrist" (come il Morricone più western remixato da Dj Shadow, con un cantato campionato chissà dove...). Ma il resto non è da meno, il livello di tutto il disco è alto e vale assolutamente la pena di essere sentito... fortemente consigliato l'ascolto perché, anche se magari ad un primo impatto potrebbe sembrare qualcosa di già sentito, con l'ascolto continuo è possibile trovarci particolari sempre nuovi ed inaspettati, piccoli tocchi di classe grazie ai quali vi potrete rendere conto di come a volte le cose più semplici possono essere anche le più geniali.
Sarebbe un 4,5 ma metto un bel 5 anche perché è un disco a cui sono particolarmente affezionato...
