C'è anche una curiosa storia alle spalle di questa parentesi sperimentale della carriera dei Beach Boys: la storia è che Brian Wilson, compositore di tutti i brani, voleva concepire il disco pop perfetto, tanto comunicativo quanto sperimentale e ricercato, e superare i Beatles. Questo album si doveva chiamare Smile; per l'opposizione degli altri membri del gruppo e per colpa della sua personalità piuttosto paranoica Brian non arrivò mai a pubblicare l'album, che oggi è rintracciabile in varie versioni solo in formato Bootleg.
Ci pensate? Quello che doveva essere il più grande disco della storia è introvabile se non come versione pirata...
Smiley Smile è per l'appunto la raccolta dei pochi frammenti pubblicati di Smile. È certo un disco che risente dell'incompiutezza dei pezzi, venuti fuori quasi astrutturati e con arrangiamenti scarni, ma è anche uno dei dischi più moderni che si possano ricordare negli anni '60, e si beve anche molta della produzione contemporanea ben più blasonata!
È sopratutto l'uso delle tecniche da studio che sorprende: dalla voce distorta fino all'eccesso di Little Pad, all'accompagnamento composto da gente che sgranocchia insalata di Vegetables, agli splendidi arrangiamenti orchestrali e visionari di Heroes and Villains, si ha veramente l'impressione che a tratti Brian Wilson abbia superato l'accoppiata Beatles/George Martin.
E come se non bastasse è un disco che merita una revisione storica anche solo per Good Vibrations, ovvero i tre minuti e mezzo più grandi che siano stati scritti nella storia del Rock (probabilmente!), un condensato di quanto di meglio aveva fatto Brian con questo e con i dischi passati. Provare per credere!
