Correvano gli anni ´60 e il grande libro del rock era appena alle prime pagine; probabilmente nessuno avrebbe potuto prevedere l´incredibile quantitá di generi e sperimentazioni sarebbero seguite negli anni futuri, ma nonostante questo i primi sperimentatori non si fecero attendere e gruppi come i mMthers of Invention o i Velvet Underground (giusto per citarne due a caso) avrebbero marchiato a fuoco la storia del decennio e della musica in toto.
Ma tra le band destinate a lasciare il segno e portare il loro contributo all´evoluzione del settore vi erano anche due gruppi in apparenza insospettabili, i Beatles nel vecchio continente e i loro "cugini" d´oltreoceano, i Beach Boys.
Partiti come gruppi pop dediti alle canzonette e alle melodie ruffiane questi due gruppi decideranno, piú o meno in contemporanea, di evolversi e portare oltre il loro suono, con l´obbiettivo di dare finalmente una dignitá artistica alla cosiddetta musica pop.
Questo portó a un rapporto di concorrenza-ammirazione in cui le due band si rispondevano album su album nel tentativo di far meglio dei concorrenti; ma come tutti sappiamo (e dopo aver letto questa rece anche i pochi che prima lo ignoravano potranno finalmente affermare: "Io so!"), dopo aver sfornato quello che viene considerato l´apice del gruppo (Pet Sounds), al quale i Fab4 risposero col stranoto Srgt.Pepper, nel tentativo di andare ancora oltre, il leader dei B.B. ebbe un colasso nervoso che portó all´arresto di quella che sarebbe dovuta essere l´opera piú ambiziosa del gruppo: "Smile".
Per anni, anzi decenni la cosa sembró finita lí, salvo poi due tentativi di resuscitare il progetto prima col gruppo nel 2004 con Smiley Smile e poi da solista (Smile), opere che peró non convinsero del tutto buona parte degli ascoltatori e che sembrarono ai piú una sorta di minestra riscaldata , oltre che fuori tempo massimo.
Nel 2011, a 44 anni dalla data di uscita originariamente prevista, la Capitol decide di pubblicare le sessioni originali dell´opera, presentando quella che dovrebbe essere la versione meno ritocatta e perció la piú fedele alla progetto originale.
Ovviamente non si poteva perdere una tale ghiotta occasione per batter cassa tra gli appassionati, ergo per queste sessioni potete scegliere tra una vasta gamma di alternative, fino ad arrivare se siete veramente sburi, alla super mega ultra limited deluxe edition formata da ben 4 vinili e 5 ciddí (in cui immagino si potranno ascoltare cose imprescindibili come mille alternative takes o remix per pezzo e i rutti e le scoregge fatte in studio; vabbé come si sará capito io l´utilitá di ste cose non l´ho mai capita...).
Io invece, da povero studene pezzente e privo di mezzi come sono, mi sono accontentato della versione sobria che si limita al minimo indispensabile e mette a mia disposizione 19 pezzi di pregevolissimo pop-psichedelico.
Ovviamente oggigiorno nulla di ció che sentirete potrá anche solo lontanamente sconvolgervi (abituati come siamo a massacrarci le orecchie con kraut, noise, industrial, black metal, etc), ma questa uscita rappresenta un´ottima opportunitá per portarsi a casa quello che, nel bene e nel male, rappresenta un pezzo di storia della popular music; senza dover ricorrere a qualche scrausa versione bootleg e con tutti i crismi dell´ufficialitá.
Inutile (ed impossibile) ovviamente dare un voto, ma da amanti del genere troverete pane per le vostre orecchie.
