Su Debaser sono praticamente misconosciuti i Boo Radleys, recensiti una sola volta! Devo ovviare… Principles, Grant Nicholas… non li conoscete?
beh… effettivamente non figurano tra i migliori gruppi britpop, sono eccessivamente psichedelici, ma nel 1995 riuscirono a piazzare il loro quarto album ,”Wake Up” alla numero 1 in UK, per poi incasellare un’accoppiata di album-flop e sparire definitivamente.
L’album che recensisco oggi è quello conosciuto dai più come il loro migliore: “Giant Steps”, qua misconosciuto, fece il boom nel 1993 in Inghilterra, osannato dalla critica (NME e Select lo inoronarono come album dell’anno) e apprezzato dal pubblico: era il periodo in cui il Britpop “veniva a galla” con gli album di Suede, Auteurs e Blur.
È molto particolare, ma fin troppo psichedelico: la qualità audio è piuttosto scarsina e spesso la voce è sopraffatta da suoni psichedelici e dagli strumenti.
Le tracce in pieno britpop style ci sono: basti sentire i singoli “(Barney)”, con un ritornello irresistibile e “Wish I Was Skinny”, con una ritmica alla Oasis. Singolo meno scontato è il primo, “Lazarus”, che inizia come un reggae-mariachi per continuare come un brano (ovviamente) psichedelico con voce vocoderizzata e fiati a go-go. “Leaves And Sand” è definibile come un brano shoegaze, ricco di feedback e calmo, sullo stile di brani come “Sing” dei Blur e quelli dei primi Verve. Particolare è la traccia d’apertura, “I Hang Suspended”, con soluzioni armoniche assai bizzarre. Brani come “Spun Around” e “Run My Way Runway” sono quelli che meglio riassumono ciò che ho scritto all’inizio: la voce, già filtrata, è affogata in un mare di feedback e suoni orchestrali nella prima e in rumori di treni che viaggiano nella seconda… belle, ma troppo cacofoniche. Orrenda traccia è invece “Rodney King”, inascoltabile, con un sintetizzatore che dà fastidio quanto le unghie sulla lavagna. Il fantasma dei Beatles di “Hey Jude” aleggia pesantemente sul brano “White Noise Revisited”, con strofe ultrapsichedeliche (ovvio, no?) e un ritornello ripetuto fino alla nausea. Bella la melodia, ma fin troppo ripetitiva (dal minuto 2’58 a 5’03’’ il gruppo canta incessantemente “ Hey, what’s that noise…. Do you remember?). “Take The Time Around” mi sa di Beatles mischiati alla rabbia Grunge… è un brano piuttosto rumoroso.
L’album, come già detto, non è un capolavoro per cura del suono, ma adotta melodie e arrangiamenti più originali di quelli del classico britpop… quindi va premiato per la brillantezza compositiva.
Nota: tutte le tracce sono tra di loro unite da rumori, accordi nel pieno stile di album come “Dark Side Of The Moon” e “Sgt. Pepper’s…”… mai sentiti nominare?
Varrebbe di per sé quattro stelle, ma la qualità scarsa del suono va a incidere sul voto, che scende a tre… Grant. Principles… ascoltateli se non li conoscete… sono pur sempre artisti brit! Da affiancare per sonorità ai Verve più psichedelici, ai Beach Boys e ai Dinosaur JR.
