I Byrds, per la storia, sono gli inventori del folk rock, quel genere di moda negli anni '60 che prendeva spunto un po' dal Dylan elettrico ed un po' dalla musica tradizionale americana.
Una musica piacevole, spensierata, particolarmente conforme alle idee pacifiste della gioventù americana, la quale si preparava al movimento hippy. In poche parole quando la gente pensa ai Byrds, pensa a "Mr. Tambourine Man", a "Turn Turn Turn (To Everything There's A Season)" e al "Jingle Jangle" della Rickenbacker 12 corde di Roger McGuinn.
Solo nel 1966, quando la psichedelia iniziò ad assumere un certo peso nel rock statunitense, andatosene dal gruppo Gene Clark, Chris Hillman al basso, Mike Clark alla batteria, McGuinn ed il leggendario Dave Crosby alle chitarre decisero di incidere qualcosa che andava oltre i tre semplici accordi.
"Eight Miles High" è l'inizio della metamorfosi: oltre ad essere un singolo di successo, è un'ode, un'ode alla psichedelia che segna la maturità dei quattro sia musicalmente che intellettualmente.
Appena un anno prima McGuinn & company si trovavano nell'alta classifica con qualche ballata folk e due semplici coretti; con "5 D" finalmente tutto questo diviene un ricordo ed i Byrds riescono a creare qualcosa di magico, di surreale, qualcosa ad otto miglia di distanza da terra!
"Fifth Dimension", brano che dà nome all'intero album, è il primo capitolo di questo tour lisergico; seguono le tradizionali "Wild Mountain Thyme" e "John Riley", le atmosfere spaziali di "Mr. Spaceman" (che relativamente ricordano "Space Oddity" di David Bowie), le chitarre di "I See You" e "Hey Joe", famosa grazie alla versione di Jimi Hendrix.
"5 D" è il primo grande contribuito da parte dei Byrds alla musica lisergica. L'album, come ho già detto, segna l'evoluzione del genio compositivo dei quattro, ma le composizioni non sono ancora del tutto psichedeliche: la loro musica è ancora ingenua, per certi aspetti incerta.
La metamorfosi si completerà con le successive "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star" di "Younger Than Yesterday" e "Artificial Energy" di "The Notorius Bird Brothers".
