2000, primavera. Marzo, se non erro, cento giorni alla maturità. Silvia, Laura, Alessandra ed Emanuela vanno in macchina sul lungomare, sigaretta in mano e birretta accanto, finestrini abbassati a lasciare che ogni ad ogni accelerata l'aria frizzante scompigli i capelli. Il sottofondo si ripete incessante, "It's an animal istinct, an animal istinct to me...", le quattro amiche, ubriache di birra e gioia di sentirsi libere una mattinata in mezzo ai loro diciotto unici anni, cantano a squarciagola.
Scendono dalla macchina con lo sportello aperto, alzano il volume dello stereo e parte la danza su "Promises". Anche le onde del mare sembrano accompagnarle nell'euforia del giorno di festeggiamenti propiziatori. Laura ha registrato la cassetta che adesso spacca le casse alla macchina di Silvia, chiedendo il cd al prof di inglese, trascrivendo i testi su un quadernino a quadretti con la copertina blu. Quel prof è un grandissimo, e sanno che quando la scuola finirà mancherà moltissimo a tutte. Sapeva spiegare Wordsworth in maniera quasi comica, e adorava i Cranberries. Laura l'ha preso talmente in simpatia che si è meritata un nove e mezzo all'interrogazione su Dickens. Anche Alessandra per la prima volta non ha niente da ridire. Laura ha un fidanzato, si chiama Mauro. Stanno insieme da qualche mese e si amano tanto, spesso però sono costretti a fare l'amore in macchina perchè a casa ci sono i genitori. Allora Mauro mette su i Cranberries e mentre nella piccola Uno Dolores canta "I'm trying to control myself so please don't stand in my way....", i due ragazzi scoprono tante "prime cose" insieme. Dopo, restano abbracciati ad ascoltare "How did I let things get to me so bad, how could I let things get to me like dying in the sun...". Pensano che staranno insieme per sempre. La cassetta è una copia di quella di Silvia.
Alessandra ha una piccola cotta per Andrea, che sta nella classe accanto, ma è troppo timida per dirglielo. Allora le altre tre socie la sfottono canticchiando "Desperate Andy lalalallaaaa" durante l'intervallo mentre fumano in bagno. Anche lei naturalmente ha copiato la cassetta. Spesso escono tutti insieme e insieme cantano "Just my imagination". Alessandra è molto intonata e anche a Mauro piace cantare. Si avvicina l'estate e nonostante tutti pensino che quei momenti dureranno per sempre, quella stessa estate che li "matura" in qualche modo li separa. Emanuela sparisce e solo dopo molto tempo si saprà che ha perso la sorella, gravemente malata. Silvia, Alessandra e Laura progettano di andare all'univeristà insieme, ma al momento di andare a iscriversi, Silvia non si fa trovare e non si farà rintracciare più. Laura e Mauro si lasciano, lui è troppo geloso e lei non vuole rinunciare alla prima volta che nella sua vita si sente grande, andando a studiare in un'altra città. Alessandra segue Laura nella stessa nuova città e insieme si sforzano di capire perchè in pochi mesi il loro mondo si è capovolto. Ascoltando ancora insieme, come una volta, "You and me, it will always be, eternally".
Per l'ultima volta, i veri Cranberries. Nuovi, ma per l'ultima volta "vecchi". Dolores non è più quello scricciolo anoressico con una voce da brividi, non canta più le ingiustizie della guerra o i patimenti dei genitori di un drogato. Mentre Dolores si consumava, un principe su un cavallo bianco l'ha salvata e sullo stesso cavallo l'ha sposata. Ora è felice, non ci sono più "Zombie" nella sua mente. Insieme ai suoi compagni "sotterra l'ascia", non ce l'ha più col mondo. Dolores è cambiata, i Crans sono cambiati. Alessandra, Laura, Silvia e Mauro presto cambieranno anche loro e anche loro non torneranno più indietro. Ci sarà il tempo per Dolores di fare due figli, un altro disco bruttissimo e poi "uccidere" i Mirtilli. Il gruppo di amici farà gli esami, trascorreranno un'altra estate di sorrisi e falò e poi si divideranno e tutto passerà.
Tre stelle (e mezzo) ai Crans, alle loro melodie d'Irlanda e alla ritrovata Dolores. Tutto il firmamento alle quattro amiche.
