Ad esattamente tre anni dall'uscita e dal mio acquisto di questo album mi sono finalmente deciso ad ascoltarlo per la seconda volta. Tanta è stata la delusione dopo il primo ascolto che avevo deciso di riporlo nei meandri dei miei scaffali e lasciarlo impolverare in compagnia di alcuni errori di gioventù che è meglio non citare. Già il precedente lavoro, "Bury The Hatchet", mostrava una certa tendenza del gruppo a passare dal buon "dream pop" a un "poppettino" (se mi concedete il termine) senza sapore, però, mentre in quell'album possiamo trovare ancora qualche spunto degno del nome "The Cranberries" e un po' della vecchia energia del quartetto irlandese lo stesso non si può dire di questo cd. Il disco suona infatti un po' tutto uguale, classici 4 - accordi - 4 con ritornello orecchiabile e melodia piuttosto banale.
Praticamente tutto l'album scorre su ritmi blandi, il che sarebbe anche accettabile se trovassimo brani a livello delle stupende ballate "Ode To My Family" o "When You Are Gone". Purtroppo però i pezzi da salvare sono ben pochi, forse quello d'apertura, "Never Grow Old", e i due di chiusura, "Carry on" e "Chocolate Brown", in particolare quest'ultima, una tenera closing-track di tre minuti e mezzo che ricorda un po' "No Need To Argue", chiusura dell'album omonimo. La struttura è pressochè simile, anche se il dolcissimo organo di quest'ultima è sostituito da un leggerissimo accompagnamento di tutto il gruppo. Gli unici pezzi un po' tirati sono "This Is The Day", "Wake Up And Smell The Coffee" e "I Really Hope". Il primo è senza infamia e senza lode, un po' scontato ma almeno il gruppo fa sentire di possedere ancora grinta, "Wake Up And Smell The Coffee" invece è piuttosto deludente, a partire dall'intro di più di un minuto fino ad arrivare alla parte cantata che fa solo pensare: "che fine ha fatto la voce di Dolores?". Bella domanda, il punto di forza dei Cranberries" del passato in tutto l'album fa poco per farsi notare, proprio in questo pezzo la melodia darebbe spazio a bei vocalizzi ma la O'Riordan non si sbilancia più di tanto lasciando l'amaro in bocca. Infine "I Really Hope" lascia abbastanza indifferenti, proprio da gettare non è, ma resta scontata e monotona dall'inizio alla fine.
Ultima cosa da notare è la totale scomparsa di quella verve socio-politica contro la guerra e le ingiustizie di quest'ultima su madri e bambini, verve che già però andava scomparendo nel precedente album. In definitiva l'album risulta una delusione, non solo perchè ascoltarlo stanca subito, ma soprattutto perchè non c'è praticamente nessun brano che si elevi sopra le righe, che, finito l'ascolto, ti ritrovi a canticchiare o fischiettare.
