Ad una prima occhiata la copertina di questo "Sun, Sun, Sun" avrebbe fatto la sua grossa figura indosso a qualche registrazione old-country o giù di lì, tanto è l'"ingiallimento" da vecchio disco di soffitta che si respira in quell'immagine. Ma dietro quella copertina, dietro quel quadretto di montagna si trovano 14 gioiellini di dolceamaro folk-pop d'una piacevolezza tale che il loro fascino si scioglierebbe come neve al sole se, con piglio distaccato, esitassimo anche per un attimo prima di entrare nel disco, in quella capanna sul lago di montagna, per scoprire cosa vi si nasconde.
Si scoprirebbe allora che dentro non abita qualche pescatore settantenne pronto a raccontarci le sua storie ma, dotata di un temperamento affine, una band giovanissima eppure già così nostalgica e malinconica. Arrivata alla loro seconda fatica sulla lunga distanza questa band statunitense (nata da una costola dei Rilo Kiley chiamata Blake Sennett) riesce a confermarsi come realtà estremamente abile nel gestire un patrimonio genetico abbastanza "pesante": se The Band avesse fatto testamento sicuramente avrebbe depositato la propria "soulness" in un pezzo come "Did me good". Ma nonostante questa attitudine "old", Sennett e compagni suonano allo stesso tempo squisitamente indie-pop.
Ecco allora spuntare fra le cianfrusaglie depositate dal tempo in quella capanna sul lago, una lap-steel, l'immancabile acustica, una slide-guitar e l'incantesimo si compie: come resistere all'invito di "Would you come with me"? Sotto tutta questa polvere, in qualche angolo nascosto, si può scoprire un piano che ricorda Elliott Smith ("Fireflies in a steel mill"), degli Okkervil River a cuore aperto ("It was love") come qualche languore alla Bright Eyes (la magica "Desiree"). Gli "eletti" sanno cosa farsene di tutta la polvere, non fermandosi a contemplarla o preoccupandosi di rimuoverla ma dimostrando con grande freschezza e disinvoltura di saper fare musica che non rischia mai di scendere nella banalità di maniera.
