Seconda uscita per i Fratellis di Glasgow, dopo l'inizio col botto di "Costello Music". E se, come dice Caparezza, 'il secondo album è sempre il più difficile nella carriera di un artista', il trio scozzese la prova più difficile sembra superarla, e anche in grande stile. Di certo non mancheranno coloro che accuseranno i Fratellis di essere troppo ripetitivi, di scopiazzare tette le loro canzoni, di essere troppo leggeri e bla bla bla, come del resto vengono accusati praticamente tutti coloro che hanno un minimo di successo, ma lasciando perdere questi finti appassionati di musica con la puzza sotto il naso, il disco è davvero piacevole e scorre via in una tracklist di potenziali singoli. E, cosa più importante, con l'ascolto viene la sensazione di trovarsi in un pub di Glasgow a ballare e sbronzarsi, come nel disco precedente.
"My friend John" è il classico pezzo di apertura, rintocchi di grancassa in evidenza e gran casino, con tanto di citazione beatlesiana ("His rubber soul burns"); si prosegue con le divertenti "A heady tale" e "Shameless" per poi arrivare al primo singolo pubblicato, "Look out sunshine!", a sorpresa il punto debole (se così si può definire) dell'album: la melodia ripetitiva non aiuta ed è troppo evidente e forzato il richiamo al brit-pop. L'altro singolo è "Mistress mabel", pezzo forzatamente fatto apposta per le classifiche ma comunque buono.
"Tell me a lie" (soundtrack del videogioco FIFA 09) riporta il disco sui classici schemi della band, insieme alla splendida "Jesus stole my baby" (testo assolutamente da leggere: in amore vi è mai capitato di avere un rivale un po' avvantagiato, tipo Gesù?). Quello che colpisce è comunque l'omogeneità del prodotto, e come questa band al secondo album riesca a mettere insieme tante canzoni di valore e tanti testi accattivanti che lasciano sempre spazio a diverse interpretazioni.
Canzoni di valore sono sicuramente le brillanti "Stragglers moon" e "Acid jazz singer". Oltre alle melodie divertenti e trascinanti non mancano però i colpi di classe: le ballate rock "Babydoll" e "Lupe brown" fanno da preludio alla deliziosa "Milk and money", pezzo di chiusura di un disco davvero da gustare, un onesto album pop-rock che può sicuramente reggere il confronto, e forse anche vincerlo, con quel "Costello music" che tanta fortuna aveva portato al trio.
