Chi si è avvicinato ai The Knife grazie a "Silent Shout" non può che rimanere molto confuso ascoltando il lavoro precedente, "Deep Cuts". Ormai ce ne sono diversi di gruppi musicali o singoli musicisti che sono per la filosofia di non ripetersi mai. I primi che mi saltano in mente or ora sono i Daft Punk, sempre per rimanere in quel campo enorme che è l'elettronica. Questo può fare più o meno piacere, il giocare sempre in nuovi generi e sottogeneri, dipende dal singolo, però è senza ombra di dubbio il fatto che bisogna dare merito a questi signori che decidono di mettersi in gioco ad ogni nuovo album.
Detto questo, chi si avvicina a "Deep Cuts" aspettandosi atmosfere fredde e cupe, propriamente nordiche, può rimanere deluso. Questo album, per molti aspetti, si può dire che è l'opposto di quelle atmosfere che si trovano nel già citato ultimo lavoro datato 2006. A partire dalla voce di Karin Dreijer. In molte tracce, la voce della cantante è quasi da bambina strafottente, viziata, che prende in giro; un timbro lontanissimo da quello presente nel singolo dei Royksoop "What Else Is There?" (per chi non lo sapesse: il singolo dei Royksoop è cantanto appunto da Karin Dreijer) che poi sarà presente in tutto "Silent Shout".
L'album inizia alla grande con "Heartbeats", un gran bel pezzo che volente o nolente ti fa battere il piede a tempo, testimonianza che i due fratelli hanno dei veri colpi di genio. Qualcuno conoscerà questa canzone nella versione con chitarra acustica di Josè Gonzales. Anche il video (altro campo importante per i The Knife) è un bel pezzo, consigliata la visione. Dopo questo inizio piacevole e immediato, si cambia totalmente e si cala un po' di qualità con le successive canzoni: "Girl's Night Out" e "Pass This On". "One For You" presenta atmosfere che saranno presenti nel disco successivo, qui Karin ha una voce monotona, bassa. Una sorta di breve intermezzo, cantanto o "recitato" dalla voce completamente distorta di Olof, "spezza" il disco. Dopo questa pausa, l'inizio di "Listen Now" prende l'ascoltatore di nuovo di sorpresa, con la sua base martellante che parte immediata; Karin qua ritorna una bambina viziata che gioca che viene zittita dalla solita voce cavernicola del fratello che canta la ninna nanna "She's Having A Baby". Uno dei pochi momenti di relax in questo disco. Segue "You Take My Breath Away" che rimette in moto il disco e lo riavvicina ad una possibile sala da ballo. "Rock Classic" è la canzone più lunga: una base minimal, la voce di Karin bassa e sensuale che si alza di tono nella seconda metà della canzone, giocando con toni alti e bassi per poi tornare come ad inizio traccia nell' ultimo minuto. Un bel pezzo, uno dei migliori del disco. Ora qua viene il bello, la canzone che più mi diverte e mi fa ridere, ovvero "Is It Medicine"; e qui dire che viene voglia di saltare è poco. Questa canzone, se si mette a volume alto come è giusto che sia, è pura adrenalina. "Is it medicine, is it medicine, is it medicine or social skills" Il video musicale che hanno fatto è meraviglioso, anche questo da consigliare. Dopo si trova "You Make Me Like Charity" e sembra quasi di ascoltare un ragazzo e una ragazza che parlano fra di loro; "Got 2 Let U", che credo si possa intuire già da come è scritto il titolo, sembra quasi un puro gioco: voci buffe, distorte grazie alla tecnologia e semplicemente caricate dai due svedesi, è quasi la canzone stessa che dice: "Non prendermi sul serio". "Behind The Bushes" è solo musica. Mancano le voci, i suoni elettronici, le distorsioni: gli archi la fanno da padrone in questa traccia, seguiti da flauti; il tutto dona un'atmosfera quasi medioevale oserei dire. Una piccola perla improvvisa, l'ultima cosa che ti aspetteresti di trovare in un album del genere. Il disco si chiude con Olof che fa da protagonista in neanche un minuto di canzone.
"Deep Cuts" sembra quasi un gioco: si possono trovare vari registri, si salta da una canzone adrenalica ad una strumentale, voci buffe e altre serie e basse, altre ancora sensuali. Difficile possa annoiare un disco del genere, al primo ascolto tutto è una continua sorpresa; un lavoro fatto con cura e studiato al dettaglio, canzoni ben bilanciate che tengono sempre viva l' attenzione di chi è veramente disposto ad ascoltare. La noia con questo disco è lontana.
