I Neville Brothers furono un gruppo di R & B, Soul e Jazz che si formò nel 1976 a New Orleans. La band era formata da Aaron Neville che era il cantante, il quale negli anni ha intrapreso anche una carriera solista, Art Neville il tastierista, Cyril Neville alla batteria, Charles Neville chitarrista e Ivan Neville al basso.
Un gruppo i Neville Brothers che nella loro lunga carriera ha visto i componenti del gruppo arrivare spesso a litigare. All'interno della band tra i fratelli c'erano sempre incomprensioni. Litigavano su tutto, sui titoli dei brani, sugli arrangiamenti, sulle copertine degli album. Paradossalmente questi fatti hanno giovato durante le registrazioni del disco.
Nel 1989 i Neville Brothers pubblicano 'Yellow Moon', il loro miglior album. Nel disco ci sono vari generi di musica, infatti ne è venuto fuori un sound talmente particolare che nessuno è riuscito ancora a classificare. 'Yellow Moon' è uno di quei dischi che sfuggono a qualsiasi definizione, unico nel suo genere. Un album da un suono unico, veramente intenso. Composto da canzoni che emozionano e incantano per la loro bellezza. Nonostante le varie incomprensioni tra i fratelli Neville quello che è venuto fuori è un capolavoro.
All'interno dell'album ci sono riferimenti continui a dei pagani, a credenze di tribù indigene. Canti di preghiere a diverse divinità. Continui riferimenti anche agli animali che queste popolazioni considerano divinità e quindi rispettano. I Neville Brothers hanno preso possesso di questi elementi, che rispettano le origini di ognuno dei componenti del gruppo. L'album è prodotto da Daniel Lanois, il quale suona anche le tastiere nel disco, e durante le registrazioni prende decisioni importanti sul come arrangiare e comporre le canzoni. Si Sente ascoltando tutto l'album il tocco del genio di Lanois. Lo stesso Lanois affermò che era sorpreso dalla bravura della band, e soprattutto dal suono veramente originale che stava venendo fuori durante le registrazioni del disco. I Neville Brothers con la collaborazione di Lanois formarono un team perfetto che diede vita a questo gioiello. Lo stesso Aaron in un'intervista ha rivelato che provava profonda ammirazione e stima per Lanois.
Apre l'album ‘'My Blood‘', nella quale già si sente il tocco di Lanois, le tastiere in lontananza che poi sono presenti per tutto il brano. La splendida voce di Aaron Neville che incanta. Nell'album ci sono due cover di Bob Dylan, un maestro per i Neville Brothers, ‘'With God On Our Side‘' e ‘'The Ballad Of Hollis Brown‘' eseguite molto bene dal gruppo. ‘A Change Is Gonna Come‘', la canzone più bella dell'album, è una cover di Sam Cooke, un classico. Qui veramente Aaron tocca la perfezione, canta in un modo eccellente e con una dolcezza infinita. Ci mette cuore e passione e viene fuori un brano splendido. ‘' Sister Rosa ‘' è un tributo a Rosa Parks che ha combattuto per la libertà e l'indipendenza del popolo dei neri. Una persona che ha significato molto per i Neville Brohers. Bellissima ‘' Voodoo ‘' che parla delle vredenze indigene. ‘'Wake Up‘' che ha un ritmo molto azzeccato con un Lanois impressionante.
Un disco meraviglioso per una band che attraverso il linguaggio musicale ha saputo trattare temi delicati come la schiavitù degli indigeni e i maltrattamenti subiti da quelle popolazioni. Delle divinità e delle abitudini di popoli e di tribù varie. Delle loro usanze, ma soprattutto della ‘luna gialla‘, un elemento fondamentale per loro.

Un disco perfetto, emozionale e spirituale, un suono sopraffino, e una band pazzesca, una profondità musicale come poche.
Ascoltare questo disco ancora oggi mi porta in mezzo alla savana, le giraffe che avanzano ondeggiando il collo, gli elefanti che spalancano le orecchie.
