Ascesa e caduta, ira e grazia.
10 anni sono passati dal "best seller" Americana, e quasi 5 anni dal loro ultimo lavoro, Splinter. Ora gli Offspring sono tornati con questo Rise and fall, rage and grace. Vi giuro, non sapevo cosa aspettarmi da questo disco e quando ascolti gli Offspring sai a cosa ti riferisci quando ti chiedi quali canzoni sforneranno, perché si può rimanere inorriditi davanti ad alcuni episodi quali "The Worst hangover ever" o esaltarsi con "The Kids Aren't Alright". Per cui inserisco il cd nel lettore ed aspetto.
"Half-Truism" è il perfetto inizio, già al secondo ascolto ti metti ad urlarla a squarciagola, perfino il mio vicino di casa la sa a memoria.
Quello che balza subito "all'orecchio" è che in questo cd gli Offspring in molte canzoni abbandono lo stile "punk Californiano" che li ha resi famosi, a favore di tracce più strutturate con continui cambiamenti di ritmo. Un esempio palese è il singolone testosteronico "Hammerhead", con un bellissimo testo sulle armi da fuoco in America e con un finale di quelli che non ti aspetti. Si passa in continuazione dall'"ira" alla "grazia", ovvero dal classico pezzo tiratissimo "Trust in You" alla Gone Away del 2008 "A lot Like Me", veramente bellissima. Da citare inoltre anche la strana "You're gonna go far kid" con un ritornello orecchiabilissimo, una delle migliori del lotto. La prima parte del cd quindi è estremamente potente e convincente. Poi incominciano le sorprese.
Puntuale come il flash dell'autovelox ecco che arriva la prima ballatona acustica, "Krisy are you doing ok?". Quello che salva questa canzone dall'oblio è il bellissimo testo dove si racconta di una ragazza che ha subito violenze sessuali. Commerciale e molto "radio friendly", niente da dire. Questa canzone ci introduce nella "grazia" del disco, rappresentata da pezzi orecchiabili e veloci e ballatone strappalacrime. Pezzo migliore della seconda parte è "Stuff is messed Up" velocissima, tirata e dura quanto basta.
Tirando le somme è bello vedere gli Offspring che tentano di "sperimentare" e non rimangono ancorati ad un solo genere. Me lo immagino Bob Rock che, seduto ad un tavolo, discute con Dexter Holland della scaletta del cd, immaginando di far contenti tutti.
Tracce veramente indigeste sono "Fix You", pezzo lento e francamente inutile e la conclusiva "Rise and Fall", praticamente un clone di "American Idiot" con accordi invertiti (mi auguro si tratti solamente di uno scherzetto di Dexter ai Green Day, data la loro continua rivalità...).
Ascesa e caduta, ira e grazia si diceva, mai titolo fu più azzeccato. Il loro migliore dai tempi di Conspiracy of One.
