Pochi artisti, nel corso della storia della musica, sono riusciti a partorire un album esordio incisivo e maturo come "Experience", primo disco dei Prodigy e, secondo molti, loro vero capolavoro.
Il gruppo, guidato dal guru delle tastiere Liam Howlett, si forma in Inghilterra nella prima metà degli anni '90, sull'onda del dilagante fenomeno dei rave party. E' ad un rave party, infatti, che Liam conosce Keith Flint, rinomato DJ della scena Techno e Hardcore dell'epoca. Bastò aggregare alla formazione il folle ed allucinato MC Maxim Reality e lo snodato ballerino Leeroy Thornhill, ed i giochi furono fatti: nacquero i Prodigy, il cui nome fu preso in prestito dal primo modello di tastiera acquistato da Liam (una Moog Prodigy, appunto).
Dopo aver firmato un contratto con la XL Recordings e aver pubblicato un 12", "When Evil Lurks", divenuto ben presto un vero e proprio anthem di qualsiasi club del pianeta, la band sforna il suo primo album, "Experience" (XL, 1992), un esplosivo concentrato di adrenalina compressa in dodici tracce deflagranti, vero e proprio manifesto della scena rave e di un nuovo modo di produrre musica "da ballo".
"Experience" è un gigantesco calderone sonoro in cui Jungle, Hardcore, Acid-Techno, Reggae ed influenze Hip-Hop divengono un tutt'uno, un unicum sorretto da un singolo obiettivo: la perdita dei sensi e di ogni percezione corporea attraverso le sette note.
L'iniziale "Jericho" ci introduce subito in una dimensione oscura e disturbante, la successiva e storica "Music Reach 1/2/3/4" trascina l'ascoltatore in un marasma caotico di suggestivi samples vocali, ritmiche impazzite e acidi deliri tastieristici, ed il risultato è stupefacente (in ogni senso possibile). Se pezzi come "Wind It Up" e "Your Love (Remix)" sembrano poi strizzare l'occhio alla componente più "Happy" del sound dei Prodigy, con giri di piano accattivanti e campioni Reggae e Soul ben amalgamati, "Hyperspeed (G-Force Pt. 2)" già dal titolo riprende il discorso interrotto con "Jericho": batteria che picchia come un martello pneumatico e atmosfere scure come la pece, che quasi incitano all'assunzione di "strane" pillolette ECSTASY-anti. Si prosegue con la seminale "Charly (Trip Into Drum And Bass Version)", che quasi preannuncia le successive evoluzioni del genere Jungle, l'epica "Out Of Space", che riprende in maniera geniale "Chase The Devil" di Max Romeo, pietra miliare del Roots Reggae degli anni' 70 convertita in un grande inno allo sballo di massa, fino a giungere all'ossessiva "Ruff In The Jungle Bizness", uno dei massimi vertici dell'intera discografia di Liam e compagni. L'album si chiude con "Death Of The Prodigy Dancers", pezzo live che sottolinea le immense capacità della band nelle esecuzioni dal vivo (Keith Flint e Maxim sono a tutti gli effetti dei veri e propri animali da palco).
Un disco che ha segnato un'epoca, insomma, "Experience", genuino, immediato e privo di quella patina alternativa-trendy che ha fatto di "The Fat Of The Land" il lavoro più osannato e sopravvalutato del quartetto inglese. Da acquistare ad occhi chiusi.

L'album è un piccolo gioiellino dell'epoca.
All'epoca avevano tutti e quattro un ruolo diverso nella band: Keith Flint era solo un ballerino (e che ballerino!) e Maxim Reality un discreto MC.
