Ho quest'immagine, di me riflesso in una vetrina di un negozio, in qualche cittadina inglese che non ricordo, nell'estate del 1982. Indosso un impermeabile assolutamente improbabile, il nuovo singolo delle Pellicce Psichedeliche, in versione extended, nella mano destra, e sto cercando di capire quanto assomiglio a Richard Butler. Annamaria ride e mi prende, giustamente, in giro.
Quando tornerò in Italia e metterò finalmente sul piatto "Love My Way", rimarrò perplesso (che sia un lusso, lo capirò solo molto tempo dopo). Cos'è questa deriva pop?
A settembre, quando esce il full-lenght "Forever Now", la stessa perplessità. Dove sono finiti il basso oscuro di "India", la tragicità di "Sister Europe", la complessità di "All of This and Nothing"? Gli angoli sono stati smussati, le paranoie bruciate. Rimane la voce, e non trovo nessun aggettivo che non sia scontato, bellissima. Pop, quasi perfetto. E qui, inevitabile, arriva la digressione. Quando conta un produttore? Abbandonato Steve Lillywhite (che peraltro non è mai stato così "sporco" nel suo lavoro come nei primi due dischi dei nostri), si è passati a Todd Rundgren. E la differenza si sente tutta. L'ex Utopia infatti infarcisce l'operetta di tutte le cose che amava all'epoca: falsi archi suonati con le tastiere, batteria elettronica, synth che vanno e vengono, raddoppiati sui finali dalle chitarre. Che, detto così, sembra una cosa molto eighties e che con il passare degli anni dovrebbe far schifo. Ed invece funziona ancora a meraviglia. Il fatto che alcuni anni prima Rundgren abbia prodotto Wave di Santa Patti, e poi produrrà Skylarking degli Ecstasy, con suoni completamente differenti, la dice lunga sull'abilità dell'uomo, ma sarebbe digressione che ci porterebbe troppo lontano.
La sostanza è che qui ci troviamo di fronte a dieci gioiellini pop, di quelli che la maggior parte dei gruppi commetterebbe un omicidio di massa per avere tutti sullo stesso album.
Liberi noi, nostalgici di movimenti più rudi, di preferire, sia all'epoca, sia oggidì, i primi due album. Ma quel che è toccato da Re Mida, non può essere discusso.
Per dire, quello stacco di chitarra post-funk, rubato ai Bunnymen, ma fatto molto meglio, che c'è in "You and I", quante migliaia di gruppi l'hanno poi usato negli anni successivi (io, con i miei, lo uso sempre)?
Impossibile comprendere quale canzone preferisca, ma "No Easy Street", anni fa, è finita in una C-90, dove ho raccolto le mie ballads preferite (anche se ha un suono totalmente diverso da tutte le ballads ivi raccolte). Ed il giochetto "You cry like a baby, you cry like a babe, you cry like a lady, you cry like a girl" lo adoro, così come il solo di chitarra finale.
