Anno 1998: I Theatre of Tragedy sono nel pieno della loro popolarità, quando i The Sins Of Thy Beloved, gruppo norvegese dedito al Gothic Metal, regala al mondo il loro debut album: “Lake Of Sorrow”. Ma non aspettatevi schitarrate death: Il combo ci propone un album celestiale, etereo, cadenzato. La musica vuole esprimere tristezza e desolazione, ma in maniera differente rispetto ai Dismal Euphony e ai Tristania: se in questi ultimi la desolazione è espressa anche con la violenza sonora, i The Sins Of Thy Beloved suonano in maniera davvero delicata, le tastiere contribuiscono a creare un soffice e magico tappeto. Anche qua abbiamo la tipica alternanza di voci tipica del Beauty And The Beast metal: la voce femminile di Anita, quasi sussurrata, si alterna a quella maschile in growl, in realtà poco presente. L’unico strumento che osa aumentare la propria sonorità è il violino, impetuoso nel suo incidere, ma anche dolce e romantico quando occorre (vedi “Until The Dark”).
I pezzi sono tutti lunghi, complessi e elaborati. Le atmosfere date dalla musica sono tipicamente nordiche e oscure (sarà che i The Sins Of Thy Beloved sono norvegesi…). I brani migliori sono la gelida title-track, la dolcissima “Until The Dark”, la doom “All Alone” e “Silent Pain” dove il violino raggiunge picchi inarrivabili a livello di emozioni. Nell complesso un album davvero ottimo, freddo e atmosferico, lontano anni luce dalle decine di uscite pseudo - gotiche che invadono il mercato. Consigliato a tutti i goth metallari del pianeta, ma anche a ci si avvicina al genere per la prima volta.
