Dopo l’esaltante “Lake Of Sorrow”, uscito nel 1998 sotto Napalm Records, molti Gothic Metallers aspettavano con impazienza il secondo platter della band norvegese.
Nel 2000 esce “Perpetual Desolation” che presenta numerose svolte stilistiche per quanto concerne la proposta della band: come prima cosa la musica è diventata molto più dinamica e aggressiva, piena di chitarre di matrice Death (una metamorfosi simile a quella dei conterranei Tristania quando sono passati da “Widow’s Weed“ a “Beyond The Veil”). La musica richiamava scenari naturali e glaciali mentre ora i richiami sono soprattutto al mondo dell’orrorifico.
Persino il growl è cambiato: non più elemento di sottofondo ma elemento portante dei brani. Le tastiere e le orchestrazioni hanno sempre un ruolo primario, ma a queste si è affiancato l’uso dell’elettronica. L’unica pecca è rappresentata dal fatto che “Lake of Sorrow” era più personale, mentre in questo nuovo capitolo i riferimenti si sprecano: Tristania, ovviamente ma anche Theatre Of Tragedy, Cradle Of Filth (nell’ utilizzo delle tastiere), Penumbria, Dismal Euphony e Therion, anche se a livello emotivo riesce a superare anche l’eccelso debut.
Il cd si apre con le note di violino di “The Flame Of Wrath”, un pezzo bellissimo e tenebroso, che alterna momenti aggressivi e pesanti ad altri più soffusi e rilassanti. Dopo i quasi 10 minuti della prima track si passa ad il pezzo migliore del platter: “Forever” : un pezzo filante, romantico e celestiale. Non mancano a dare colore ai pezzi le tastiere, il classico violino e degli inserti elettronici. Capolavoro di intensità.
“Pandemonium” è un pezzo che ha un incipit molto battagliero. Anita canta ottimamente e gli inserti di violino danno un tocco di glacialità al pezzo. “Partial Insanity” è un pezzo stupendo, pieno di tastiere... In alcuni frangenti, grazie all’ utilizzo dell’elettronica e dei cori, ricorda l’immortale “Opus Relinque” dei Tristiana. Un pezzo molto terrificante e spaventoso , non c’è che dire.
“Perpetual Desolation” si apre in maniera molto ritmata ed ha un incidere impetuoso: un pezzo dalle atmosfere molto gotiche e notturne. Il cantato di Anita sembra un vero grido d’aiuto dall’orrore trasmesso dal pezzo! “Nebula Queen” è un pezzo pacato e tranquillo, vicino al materiale di “Lake Of Sorrow” anche se non mancano irruenti riff: bellissimo l’intermezzo ad opera delle tastiere e del violino. “The Morniful Euphony” è un pezzo classicamente gotico, dotato di una vena romantica e cupa non indifferente. Degno di nota è l’intermezzo dove le tastiere simulano un clavicembalo di altri tempi, che porta l’ascoltatore in una dimensione fiabesca e remota, ma sempre in un’ottica dark. “A Tormentated Soul” è il primo pezzo che ho sentito della band scandinava ed è forse l’episodio meno riuscito di tutto il lavoro, senza la magia delle altre tracks.
Chiude il cd un’inaspettata e energica cover dei Metallica: “The Thing That Should Not Be” riletta in chiave gotica senza perdere un briciolo della sua originaria carica distruttrice. Nel complesso ci troviamo davanti un lavoro emozionante pregno di atmosfera e magia che, nonostante qualche limite (come la non eccelsa originalità) consiglio a tutti gli amanti del Gothic Metal a doppia voce.
