La prima volta che ho intravisto il video di “Rock & Roll Queen” ho pensato: “cazzo, quel finocchio di Molko si è fatto biondo”. Viva la miopia.
Eccomi alla prima. Subways quindi. Dall’Inghilterra, album d’esordio. Un occhio al video che va in ripetizione su rocktv. Poi due orecchi sull’intero album. Per chi non li avesse già bollati, provo a dargli qualche chance. Vediamo il bicchiere mezzo pieno quindi: l’album è interessante, forse più del singolo che dopo una decina di ascolti potrebbe già nauseare (ma anche no).
I Subways potrebbero facilmente essere l’ennesimo clone del clone. La coca-cola light con già il limone dentro, sullo scaffale dello spaccaprezzi mediatico–musicale contemporaneo. Io dico di no.
Gli ingredienti: grunge nirvaneo, schitarrate primi Oasis, attitudine Rock’n'Roll (The Vines, The Strokes). Il cantato di Billy Lunn in alcuni episodi mi ricorda i “The music”. Più spesso lo troviamo intento a sbraitare, alternandosi al microfono con la bassista Charlotte Cooper, come da buon figlio della R&R Revolution. Come dire, i cuginetti incazzati di quel migliaio di gruppi col “The” davanti. Melodie oneste, belle cariche, neanche banali.
I tre piazzano sapientemente qua e là anche qualche ballata acustica. Di trascinante, la carica e la passione che trasmettono. Se dal vivo l’effetto è lo stesso, allora spaccano. Io credo, se trovano la loro strada mantenendo inalterato il loro “teen spirit”, senza rinunciare ad una normale evoluzione, allora avranno tanto da dire (e noi da ascoltare). Di contro, ci ritroveremo tra i piedi l’ennesima band già arrivata prima di partire, che ha già usato tutte le armi a disposizione per attirare MTV e soci.
Questo, se il bicchiere è mezzo vuoto. Eppure, adesso che sono arrivato in fondo all’album, il bicchiere mi pare proprio mezzo pieno.
