Dopo il travolgente esordio che era il self-titled, il molto meno travolgente sophomore album "In Love And Death" (stroncato dalla critica terrestre nella sua totalità), e l'orripilante CD Live (dopo soli due dischi?) "Berth" (che, per mettere le cose in chiaro, fa cagare quanto il nome che gli hanno dato), gli Usati tornano alla carica con questo "Lies For The Liars".
Sfortunatamente non è che con questo disco il gruppo abbia fatto grandi passi in avanti rispetto al precedente: un po' più di elettronica, produzione sempre onnipresente e anche un po' invadente, un leggero spostamento verso lidi dance-rock e totale abbandono dei (già pochi) pezzi di "new-emo" che caratterizzavano gli album precedenti. Ora, se a uno piacciono gruppi come Panic! At The Disco e Fall Out Boy, in "Lies For The Liars" ci sono almeno un paio di pezzi di cui potrà essere felice e non poco, anche in virtù (?) del fatto che sono pesantemente scopiazziati proprio dai gruppi di cui sopra.
Quelli come me che invece auspicavano un appesantimento del sound della (boy?)band, un abbandono del radio-friendly sempre e comunque, o almeno un songwriting che sappia spingersi oltre il verso-ritornello-verso-ritornello-finale rimarranno a bocca asciutta (arida).
Non che il disco sia inascoltabile, anzi tutti i pezzi sono piuttosto orecchiabili, da quelli più "tirati" come "The Ripper" o "Liar Liar (Burn In Hell)" alle ballate smielate (immancabili...), passando per i già citati pezzi di pop/rock danzereccio ("Paralyzed", "With Me Tonight"), ma presentano una povertà di sostanza disarmante, e di conseguenza tendono a "stuccare" piuttosto presto.
"Pretty Handsome Awkward" sarebbe anche un bel pezzo di "rock" leggero (passatemi il termine), se non fosse che sa di già sentito già dal primo riff, e (soprattutto) che vanta un ritornello degno del prossimo spot della Vodafone (irritante). "The Bird And The Worm" risulta invece molto gradevole con la sua atmosfera dark e Burtoniana, con tanto di corde pizzicate di violino, porte scricchiolanti e canti gregoriani, ma è una (piccola) luce nell'oscurità più totale... troppi ritornelli, troppo catchy, troppo prodotto, troppo ammiccante, poco potente, poco genuino, per nulla profondo: ecco cosa è "Lies For The Liars".
Considerando che hanno avuto tre anni per lavorarci, mi pare lecito dire che ci si poteva aspettare (molto) di più.
