Sicuramente chi ama i Verve di Bittersweet Symphony, Sonnet e Lucky Man storcerà un po' il naso al primo ascolto di questo album, uscito nel 1993. Ed è quello che è capitato anche a me, devo essere sincero...
Ma poi, ascoltandolo due-tre-quattro volte mi sono reso conto della validità di questo lavoro, che di pop non ha assolutamente nulla...
È un disco molto omogeneo, senza particolari sbalzi tra ballate e rock un po' più tirato. L'omogeneità sta nel fatto che ci sono 10 tracce di un rock psichedelico molto calmo, in cui in alcuni tratti la musica sovrasta la voce di Richard Ashcroft (come in "Slide Away" e in "Already There"), ma ciò non dà assolutamente fastidio all'ascoltatore, anzi, fa apprezzare sicuramente il particolare sound della band inglese agli esordi.
"A Storm in Heaven" si apre con la bella scarica elettrica di "Star Sail", il brano più rock insieme a "The Sun, The Sea" ed a "Blue". "Virtual World" è una ballata semi-acustica, con una batteria leggerissima che fa da sostegno alle melodie espresse dalla chitarra e con dei flauti dolcissimi nella parte finale della canzone.
I primi secondi di "Butterfly" ci ricordano leggermente "Fade In-Out" degli Oasis, per il resto è una traccia con continui cambi di passo, prima calma, poi accelerata, poi di nuovo calma, fino all'introduzione del sax (presente anche in "The Sun,The Sea"), che ci condurrà fino alla fine del brano.
"See You In The Next One (Have A Good Time)" ci riporta un po' al Lou Reed solista, ed è una classica ballata stile-british con l'intro in pianoforte con la quale si chiude l'album.
Questo è un disco da ascoltare in completo relax, ci penseranno questi 46 minuti a rilassarvi ulteriormente.
Il risultato finale è un lavoro degno del genio (ormai smarrito) di Richard Ashcroft, e dire che l'avevo trovato due anni fa in un negozio a 18mila lire e non l'avevo comprato semplicemente perché sul disco c'era scritto "Verve" e non "THE Verve" (non pensavo fosse la band di Richard, pensate voi...) ...a proposito: nel nome della band in questo album non è presente il "The": lo hanno acquisito dopo, a causa di una disputa con una casa discografica...(grazie giov per l'info!!!)
