Qualche tempo da scrissi una recensione su questo doppio disco dei Therion: l'avevo appena acquistato e ascoltato non più di un paio di volte, ed ero rimasto stregato, completamente rapito dal suo fascino e dalle sue atmosfere, poi me lo sono risentito nei giorni successivi atre due, tre, quattro, cinque volte, sono andato a rileggermi la mia vecchia recensione e mi sono accorto di aver scritto (e per giunta male) una lista infinita di solenni pirlate, a cui ora voglio rimediare con un'analisi più attenta dell'oggetto in questione.
Innanzitutto, "Gothic Kabbalah" non è un capolavoro, assolutamente no, non è un gran disco e nemmeno un buon disco. Ma allora, che diamine è "sto coso" Semplice è, coma la coca-cola, un prodotto gonfiato con l'aria.
Ribadisco che canzoni come "Der Mitternachtslowe", "Gothic Kabbalah", "The Eternal Sophia" e "Three Treasures" si lasciano comunque ascoltare con relativa facilità, grazie al piglio power-pop e alle interpretazioni comunque buone, ma comunque ciò non toglie che questo disco sia una colossale fregatura, per le seguenti ragioni:
1-La vocalist femminile, mi dispiace dirlo, è una vera e propria chiavica, che il più delle volte nel vano tentativo di assumere una tonalità sensuale e mistica finisce per prodursi in miagolii sguaiati degni della peggiore Elisa (ascoltate il mezzo scempio che compie proprio nelle pur bellissime "Gothic Kabbalah", "The Eternal Sophia", oppure in "The Wand Of Abaris" e "Path To Arcady")
2-Anche alcune voci liriche risultano così teatrali e stucchevoli da far venire il latte alle ginocchia, come ad esempio in "Son Of The Staves Of Time", "Tuna 1613" e soprattutto "Chain Of Minerva", una delle canzoni più brutte del disco, soporifera a livelli imbarazzanti.
3-In questo disco manca il sangue, manca l'impeto, manca la rabbia che sta alla base di un qualsiasi disco metal, e anche quando i nostri tentano di indurire il sound tutto quello che ne esce fuori e un miscuglio senza né capo né coda come "TOF-The Trinity"
4-Canzoni come "The Wisdom And The Cage" e "The Falling Stone" altro non sono se non delle tiritere scialbe e inconcludenti, per giunta cantate malissimo e arrangiate con uno stile barocco estremo, davvero esagerato e di cattivo gusto anche per me, che non sono propriamente un amante della sobrietà in campo musicale.
5-i brani più power come "Son Of The Staves..." e "Tuna 1613" nel complesso non valgono più di una qualsiasi "Triumph For My Magic Steel" o "The Last Angel's Call" dei tanto bistrattati Rhapsody, anzi, finiscono per perdere il confronto coi i sopraccitati brani per manifesta inferiorità, dovuta sempre a quella finta patina mistica ed estatica che al terzo, massimo quarto ascolto già finisce per rompere le scatole.
6-Canzoni come "Close Up The Streams" e "Path To Arcady" sono dei riempitivi puri e semplici che implorano di essere skippati, inseriti al solo scopo di far arrivare le canzoni al fatidico numero 15, e realizzare un album (per di più doppio) imponendo a tutti i costi una determinata struttura fa inevitabilmente perdere spontaneità, anche la suite conclusiva "Adulruna Rediviva" si rivela uno stucchevole e continuo girare a vuoto che fa da perfetto specchio a tutti i difetti del disco. 7-i testi: l'alchimia, le rune, le profezie, la fine del mondo, i culti pagani e i riti antichi sono tutti argomenti molto affascinanti e interessanti, ma a questo punto preferisco o leggere un libro o guardare un documentario, possibilmente senza qualche canzone di "Gothic Kabbalah" come colonna sonora
Tirando le somme, miei cari Therion: so che siete molto bravi e capaci di creare, se solo lo volete, dei piccoli capolavori come "Theli", "Vovin", oppure anche "Lemuria" o "Sirus B", ma per favore, buttate nel secchio tutte 'ste pippe mentali sulla cabala, che in fin della fiera non vi fanno sembrare tanto diversi da Louise Veronica Ciccone, via tutte 'ste voci liriche o pseudo liriche da operetta, via pure tutti 'sti arrangiamenti esagerati: tornate ad ascoltarvi "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, o anche "Visions" degli Stratovarius, prendete appunti e ripartite da zero, date ascolto al mio accorato appello, altrimenti, con un altro album come questo, finirete per diventare delle inutili cariatidi, delle statue fredde senza alcuna emozione da trasmettere, e sarebbe una fine molto ingloriosa per una bella realtà come la vostra. Magari non sarò Cagliostro o Nostradamus, però vi ho avvisati...
