Se state cercando il sound dei primi dischi di Tricky in questo suo lavoro del 2001 non lo troverete di certo. Gli unici punti di contatto con il suo recente passato si riferiscono soltanto a "Nearly God" per la molteplicità delle collaborazioni presenti e per lo spirito entusiastco e l'energia che Tricky ci ha messo proprio come agli esordi della sua carriera. Questo disco rappresenta un nuovo punto di partenza per Adrian Thaws, nel vero senso della parola difatti sono cambiate moltissime cose dal suo precedente lavoro "Juxtapose"(1999): nuovo stile di vita (mangia solo biologico), nuova etichetta discografica (dalla major Island all'indie Anti-Epitaph) e nuovo manager. Se questo non influenza la creazione di un disco non so cosa potrebbe!?
Come rilasciato in parecchie interviste Tricky esprime la volontà di parlare a qualsiasi persona e non fare, come in passato una discriminazione musicale; vuole essere più universale, non solo per la varietà di stili presenti in "Blowback" ma anche per la solarità di molte tracce. Vengono esplorati nuovi suoni a 360 gradi: Rock, Hip Hop, Raggamuffin' e naturalmente il tocco della bacchetta magica di Tricky che rende il disco del tutto personale, unico, puro. Un ibrido che per sua stessa natura sfugge ad ogni possibile classificazione, just Tricky.
Il bellissimo piano di "Excess" apre le danze con la collaborazione di Alanis Morissette e Stephanie Mckay; qui Tricky ci da un pezzo più tradizionale del solito se non altro nella struttura dello stesso con tanto di ritornello ("...i believe in people lying, i believe in people dying..."). Il primo singolo "Evolution-Revolution Love" che vede la partecipazione di Ed Kowalczyk dei Live e di un artista Raggae di grande talento Hawkman, suona come se stesse appena iniziando una guerra di suoni. Hawkman lo ritroviamo (e lo ritroveremo più in là) in "Over Me" assieme alla first lady indiscussa del disco Ambersunshower che duetta con Tricky nella melodiosa e decadente ninna nanna "Your Name" ("...one live as two, two live as one under the mango tree...") e nella stupefacente "You Don't Wanna" campionando la quinta essenza del pezzo elettronico ("Sweet Dreams" degli Eurythmics). Il bagliore del sole arriva con il sound californiano dovuto all'ingresso di metà formazione dei Red Hot: "Girls" è un pezzo in puro stile "Peppers" con Tricky che si scontra in una battaglia Hip Hop con Anthony Kiedis mentre Frusciante si divide tra questo pezzo e la riproposta della sigla di Wonder Woman "#1 Da Five" con Flea al basso per una traccia indiscutibilmente Funky e di puro delirio. Parecchi i pezzi con Hawkman: "Give it To'Em" e "Diss Never(Dig Up We History)" sono perle Raggamuffin' dove si percepisce perfettamente lo spirito dei bassifondi giamaicani con tanto di lamenti disumani. "Bury The Evidence", il pezzo più bello del disco, sprigiona una tensione paragonabile solo a "Pre-Millennium Tension" con l'esplosione di una Metal guitar verso la fine, orgasmico. La cover dei Nirvana "Something In the Way" è ancora più angosciante e claustrofobica e sicuramente più da "viaggio" rispetto all'originale. Direttamente dagli anni '80 Cyndi Lauper canta nell'inquinata "Five Days" ripetendo incessantemente ("...the five to fours i can't take it no more...") tra scosse elettriche e black-out. In "A Song For Yukiko" duetta con Yukiko Takahashi e canta proprio in giapponese cullato da un'improvvisazione di pianoforte.
Bellissima la copertina d'autore (Anton Corbijn) che sintetizza perfettamente lo spirito dell'album e del titolo (-to blow -fumare erba) infatti passarsi il fumo di bocca in bocca è un gesto molto "sensuale e generoso" proprio come questo disco.
