Il periodo più buio del Thrash è al suo triste culmine, i Metallica sono ufficilamente decaduti, così come Megadeth ed altre leggende di questo genere di musica che aveva stupito tutti, piazzandosi in cima alle classifiche di tutto il mondo.
Uno spiraglio di luce si ha, nel 2005, con l'uscita del secondo album dei Trivium, guidati dall' indiavolato americano-giapponese Matt Heafy. La band di Orlando, infatti dopo il debutto autofinanziato Ember To Inferno, viene messa sotto etichetta dalla celebre Liferecords, cosicchè il quartetto ha la possibilità di offrire ai propri fan un lavoro di qualità molto superiore al primo album (da non buttar via comunque). Marzo 2005 è il periodo della consacrazione di Heafy e compagni, che subito vengono affiancati ai Machine Head nel loro Tour. Ormai i Trivium non sono più trascurabili , ma un vero e proprio fenomeno musicale: subito viene accostato loro il soprannome di "nuovi Metallica", anche se sarebbe riduttivo parlare di Ascendancy come di un album unicamente Thrash.
E' infatti un crogiuolo di diverse correnti musicali: in primis lo Speed Thrash della Bay Arena di S. Francisco, ma anche l'Heavy Metal britannico di Iron Maiden, e le nuovi correnti Progressive-Hardcore che stanno attraversando l'America; doppio pedale martellante, riff portati alla velocità della luce, un potentissimo basso che penetra l'udito, growl e cori melodici fusi tra loro con grande maestria, così come vengono alternati momenti "melodicamente potenti" ed altri in cui la distorsione istiga esplicitamente al pogo: così può essere riassunto questo grandissmo lavoro.
Non bisogna lascirasi ingannare dall'armonioso Intro "The End Of Everything", già "Rain" cattiva ma allo stesso tempo assolutamente orecchiabile ci fa capire i che pasta sono fatti i Trivium. Si procede con la ormai celebre "Pull Harder On The Stryngs Of Your Martyr" (aperta da un eccezionale Fill della macchina da guerra Travis Smith), che si rivela una delle tracce più eneregetiche e difficili da masticare per i deboli di sangue. Seguono poi due altre interessanti canzoni, ovvero "Drowned And Torn Asunder" e "Ascendancy" che mescolano alla velocità elementi tipici degli Iron di Steve Harris, con cori di rinnovata potenza accompagnati da riff indimenticabili. " A Gunshot To The Head Of trepidation", uno dei punti forti dell'album, riprende invece masimamente le linee delll Hardcore, rendendole meno aspre con piacevoli intervalli melodici di sole chitarra e batteria e da una sorprendente seconda parte che prende quasi le connotazioni dell'Hard Rock. Seguono poi altre tracce in cui risalta negativamente "Dying In Your Arms" quasi punk- pop sebbene la voce di Heafy salvi tutto. Da sottolineare in seguito la spaccatutto "Suffocating Sight", sostenuta da un mostruoso doppio pedale di Smith, che nell'ambito Metal si afferma sempre più uno dei migliori batteristi al mondo. Segue la riposante "Departure", che dà un meritato sollievo all'orecchio (anche se solo parziale), e si chiude in bellezza con "Declaration", originale ma pur sempre legata al filone che lega tutto l'album e lo rende a volte difficilmente digeribile e leggermente monotono.
L'impressione generale è decisamente positiva, poichè i Trivium (come dice il loro stesso nome, sintomo di rivalutazione dei diversi generi musicali) riprendono la straordinaria musica degli anni '80 fondendola con grande bravura con tutto ciò che c'è di rilevante nel Metal a loro contemporaneo. Forse manca qualche intervallo che riposi il nostro povero udito, e dia più fluidità ad Ascndancy che comunque rimane un ottimo lavoro.
