Ci sono tempi che non torneranno mai più. Quando Bono non immaginava nemmeno che vent'anni dopo avrebbe messo un pochino da parte il suo ruolo da rockstar per salvare le balene, gli U2 sfornavano questo primo EP, con la CBS... ed era il 1979. Sono solo 3 canzoni, di cui due : Stories For Boys e Out Of Control verrano riprese e rimaneggiate nell'album d'esordio. Quello che si ha di fronte è un acerbo primo passo verso un'originalità di suoni e testi che i quattro neo-maggiorenni devono ancora trovare. Out Of Control è il manifesto di questo periodo di deriva, del rock e dei primi U2, sonorità del tempo vengono amalgamate senza troppi pensieri : Joy Division (nel successivo album, "A Day Without me" rappresenterà la reazione di Bono al suicidio di Ian Curtis), Sex Pistols, Ramones in primis. Ed è abbastanza godibile sentire l'Explorer di the Edge sparare riff diretti e genuini, ascoltare la parte ritmica di Larry e Adam sorreggere l'intero EP. Può Bono in un disco degli U2 rimanere in secondo piano? Nel 1979 : sì. E non succederà più.
Out Of Control è stata riproposta nel tour del 2000, ma non aveva più ragione di essere, un pò come Daltrey e Townshend che oggi cantano "I Wanna Die Before Get Old": fuori luogo. Three è "tutto quello che la band di Dublino si è lasciata alle spalle". Forse era meglio non dimenticare.
