Ignorante-pedia etichettava i primi lavori della band come "Space rock" così, attratto da quello che sembrava un boccone succulento, mi solo lanciato sul loro primo disco, intitolato con molta poca fantasia "UFO 1".
La mia prima impressione è stata quella di averci preso appieno: un Intro strumentale, "Unidentified flying object", apre il disco pennellandolo subito di sonorità cosmiche...
Ma nei confini fisici del disco, di Space rock c'è molto poco.
L'album è infatti uno dei numerosissimi e bellissimi dischi Heavy Psych, spuntati come i funghi in quel periodo (primi anni '70).
Largo spazio quindi al Blues rock, sia esso settantiano e dal gradevole retrogusto Stoner ("Boogie", "Evil") oppure più scanzonato e sessantino ("C'mon everybody", "Follow you home", "Who do you love"). Un paio di lenti ci mostrano il lato più introverso della band e richiamano le suggestioni spaziali dell'Intro: "Come away", è una malinconica ballad scandita dall'uso del crybaby, "Tracle people" invece è affine per sonorità a certi Pink Floyd. Chiude il buon lotto di canzoni l'Acid rock di "Timothy".
I testi sono spesso poco impegnati e questo potrebbe far storcere il naso a qualcuno, ma il disco è davvero molto piacevole e variegato, merito anche di una buona produzione che fa risaltare al massimo l'ottimo gioco del basso senza nulla togliere all'importanza preponderante della chitarra.
Molte band settantiane dedite all'Hard rock psichedelico hanno avuto scarso successo di critica, e sono scomparse dopo un solo album: basti pensare agli ottimi Yesterday's children, o ai Leaf Hound. Non è questo il caso degli UFO i quali, nonostante i rimaneggiamenti del caso fatti al sound, sono tutt'ora in attività e hanno sfornato gran bei dischi, su tutti "Phenomenon".
Vi invito quindi a riscoprire questo gruppo, di cui si parla davvero troppo poco. Voi però.. io sarò ancora alla ricerca di qualcuno che suoni come gli Hawkwind.
