C'era un tempo una band che partendo all'ombra di monumentali sagome come Deep Purple, Black Sabbath e Led Zeppelin ha avuto la faccia tosta di sfidare l'Inghilterra e il mondo, proponendo hard rock nel momento in cui stava impazzando. Una band guidata da un leader carismatico ed introverso come Mick Box, affiancato dall'estro di Ken Hensley. Un tempo in cui album come "Salisbury", "Look at yourself", "Demons & wizards" e "The magician's birthday" avevano fatto ricredere anche la critica, che dal canto suo non ha fatto altro che distruggerli fin dal loro esordio. Da "Sweet freedom" si erano avuti i primi piccoli segnali di un incrinamento che li ha pian piano portati ad un livello compositivo sempre meno convincente di quanto non è stato fatto con i primi lavori. L'arrivo di John Lawton alla voce con l'abbandono del grandissimo David Byron, aveva in parte risollevato gli animi e le vendite grazie ad un ottimo disco di hard rock come "Firefly". Gli anni con Lawton sono stati caratterizzati dalla voglia di tornare ad un certo livello. Voglia puntualmente disattesa dall'abbandono di quest'ultimo, rimpiazzato dal singer John Sloman, anch'esso dotato di un'ottima estensione vocale e chiamato a non far rimpiangere due mostri sacri come Byron e Lawton. Altro colpo durissimo per la band fu l'abbandono del batterista Lee Kerslake che venne rimpiazzato da Chris Slade.
Sulla falsariga di questi avvenimenti destabilizzanti per il gruppo e con l'acredine sempre crescente tra i due leader Hensley e Box, nacque il tredicesimo album in studio degli Uriah Heep: "Conquest". Questo lavoro segue quell'alleggerimento del sound che c'era stato a partire da "Wonderworld" (1974) e poi accentuato ulteriormente con "Innocent victim" (1977). Infatti fin dall'iniziale "No return" abbiamo la sensazione di una band indecisa sul come dover proseguire la propria carriera: continuare sulla linea hard rock che ne ha dato gli esordi o virare verso una soluzione tendente al pop per accaparrare nuovi fans? E' questo uno dei maggiori quesiti che la band di Charles Dickens si è posta per ben delineare una situazione che negli ultimi anni si era fatta alquanto complessa. C'è comunque da sottolineare che nonostante il panorama in cui nacque il disco non fosse dei più limpidi, "Conquest" non è un album da buttar via. La seconda canzone, "Imagination", conferma ciò, grazie ad un'ottima prova di Sloman dietro il microfono e ad un'atmosfera in bilico tra hard rock e scenari futuristici e nebbiosi che richiamano alla mente alcune ballate del primo periodo. Anche "Feelings" e "Fools" confermano il buon piglio di Conquest, sebbene sia palese il distacco compositivo e qualitativo di esso rispetto agli album su citati.
Per tutti quelli che si aspettavano dalla nuova line up un ritorno al passato versi lidi maggiormente rock, la delusione si sostituì ben presto alla curiosità. Ciò non toglie che "Out on the street" sia una delle migliori song del "new period" degli Uriah Heep, grazie al suo lento arpeggio, all'atmosfera decadente e alla pregevole prova canora di John Sloman. Una song in pieno stile prog rock su cui si innestano reminescenze di un certo tipo di rock psichedelico che aveva avuto sempre in Inghilterra i suoi natali (vedi i King Crimson).
Inutile quindi stare ad analizzare il perchè delle critiche che Conquest si ritrovò addosso. Una parte degli allora "esperti musicali" avevano ingaggiato una crociata "a prescindere" contro gli Uriah Heep. "Conquest" non è certo il capolavoro della loro discografia ne tantomeno un disco che rimarrà nella storia ma nonostante ciò per tutti coloro che hanno a cuore questa band ed hanno a cuore il rock è comunque un episodio che merita di essere ascoltato, benchè non abbia le caratteristiche fondamentali delle opere iniziali. Un pezzo, un tassello della loro gloriosa carriera.
