Ho avuto modo di verificare, con 'Ultra Blue' di Hikaru Utada, che il jpop è un genere per davvero. Non vuol dire solo "pop giapponese": ha sue caratteristiche e per questo bisogna avvicinarvisi con molta apertura se si è soliti ascoltare musica occidentale.
Ma non è questo il caso. Qui non si tratta di Hikaru Utada, ma di Utada: la persona è la stessa, il progetto è diverso. Il debutto americano di questa artista che in patria è una star senza pari è un disco che riesce ad essere nello stesso momento musica da sottofondo, musica profonda e musica frivola da ballare. È praticamente il disco perfetto.
Solo che di questo non te ne accorgi subito. Perché la grandezza di 'Exodus', prodotto in maniera egregia e curato tanto nel sound quanto nei testi, emerge piano piano. E il bello è che Utada è squisitamente orecchiabile. D'altronde questo è un disco principalmente dance, e di stampo occidentale. Gli fa un baffo a tutti i critici che usano a iosa la parola "ruffiano" quando si tratta, invece, del piacere di assecondare l'orecchio. Usa anche la voce con una certa maestria, questa ventiquattrenne tuttofare. Scrive tutto e lavora alla produzione (quando serve si fa aiutare, ad esempio, da Timbaland, nella bellissima "Exodus '04") e sforna dodici piccoli gioiellini (più l'intro e un azzeccato intermezzo) che vanno da una martellante "Devil Inside" a una "Hotel Lobby" simil-trip-hop, fino a quelle "Wonder 'bout" e "Let Me Give You My Love" che sembrano voler assemblare alle atmosfere danzerecce che attraversano l'album delle canzoni dal cuore soul. Raggiunge la massima spensieratezza nel refrain di "Easy Breezy" (You're easy breezy and I'm Japaneesy... sfido chiunque a non canticchiarla in loop). Trascina senza sosta, attraverso percussioni che ossessionano; rilassa, suggerisce.
Un disco così ballabile ma i cui episodi migliori, senza nulla togliere al resto (anzi aggiungendo qualcosa), sono quelli più dolci: la già citata "Exodus '04", "Animato" (incantevole nel suo ritmo bandistico), "Kremlin Dusk" (disarmante, sincera, toccante nei suoi vocalizzi, perfetta nei momenti in cui sembra galoppare) e la conclusiva, emozionante "About Me", in cui Utada si smaschera davanti alla persona che ama.
Un universo meraviglioso di sentimenti che si accavallano, in grado di soddisfare tanto il pubblico più raffinato quanto quello più mainstream. Peccato che gli americani non l'abbiano capito a sufficienza.
