Vanden Plas è un quintetto tedesco dedito al progressive metal. Il disco in questione è il loro terzo di carriera dei sei finora pubblicati, ai quali va aggiunto un settimo lavoro acustico nonché un ottavo dal vivo. La band trae ispirazione primariamente dai portabandiera Dream Theater, secondariamente da chi l'ibrido progressive metal l'ha tirato coniato per primo, cioè Rush e Kansas, terziariamente anche da altri capiscuola del metal in qualche modo romantico ed estetizzante, ad esempio Dokken e poi via via Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy... per scivolare verso Yes, Genesis ecc., fino ai Beatles che come influenza primordiale non guastano mai... occorre suonare quanto meno del black metal per non trovarseli come ispiratori...
Rispetto al principale riferimento costituito dal Teatro del Sogno, i cinque di Kaiserslautern sono meno intricati e sboroni (e che ci vuole). Tendono si a dilatare i brani, ma difficilmente oltre i sei, sette minuti. Dato il genere, i quattro strumentisti del gruppo sono belli svegli e preparati sui loro attrezzi e non potrebbe essere altrimenti, ma insomma si bada abbastanza al sodo qui, leggi melodie e progressioni armoniche di pregio (stabilito il necessario interesse dell'ascoltatore per il lato pomposo e wagneriano del rock duro).
Il cantante soprattutto, che all'anagrafe fa Andy Kuntz, è assai più convincente dell'appena convincente e discretamente fuori contesto James Labrie, il canadese che ha fatto fortuna insieme ai Theater. Specie nelle ballate lente, quando i giochi sono soprattutto condotti dal rigoglioso pianoforte di Günther Werno, la sua appassionata espressività e ricchezza armonica vengono fuori alla grande. E' il caso della sesta traccia "I Don't Miss You" in cui la struggente nostalgia delle liriche è amplificata da autentica partecipazione e convinzione, oltre che da sublime timbro.
A comporre gli episodi più intricati ci pensa il lungo crinito chitarrista Stephan Lill, un condensato di chitarrismo anni ottanta ma senza strafare. La formazione è completata da suo fratello Andreas (che invece tiene i capelli a spazzola) alla batteria e dal bassista Torsten Reichert, ovvero il tipo accigliato e tatuato in copertina.
I gruppi tedeschi veramente originali sono ben altri... questi qui sono del tutto derivativi, ma molto intensi e bravi; più bravi dei loro maestri, quanto meno dal punto di vista del senso della misura e del buon gusto.
