Probabilmente Richie Blackmore dorme sonni tranquilli, ma pensando alla stratosferica carriera di David Coverdale dopo i Deep Purple, considerando che attorno c'era solo terra bruciata, viene da pensare cosa sarebbe stato se le due carriere avessero continuato insieme. Ma con la sua bellissima voce ha conquistato le platee di tutto il pianeta, e non solo nei pezzi hard, ma anche in molte belle ballate.
Questo disco, arrivato in un periodo di leggero declino per gli Whitesnake, sembra voler introdurre una sorta di nuovo genere, un melodic-rock dai toni scuri e romantici allo stesso tempo, lasciando però spazio anche a qualche riff un po' più spinto. Si potrebbe da certi punti di vista definire uno dei peggiori album del "Serpente bianco" di Coverdale, ma l'ascoltabilità non è preclusa, soprattutto grazie alle grandi doti di vocalist del leader e fondatore della band. Certo i "David Coverdale's Whitesnake" (questo, per l'occasione, il nome usato sulla copertina) non hanno in genere bisogno di presentazioni, ma questo album, un po' controverso, un po' commerciale, potrebbe far arrabbiare i fan delle versioni più heavy del gruppo, ma le atmosfere create dalla voce di Coverdale fanno ascoltare gradevolmente diversi pezzi di questo disco.
"Don't Fade Away", la prima traccia, come "Can't go on", sembrano richiamare i tempi di "Soldier Of Fortune", ma il risultato, complice la voce maturata e le aggiunte di cori femminili, non è lo stesso. Gradevoli comunque. Incerte e non perfette, canzoni come "Crying" e "Stay With Me" farebbero quasi venir voglia di spegnere lo stereo, ma ci pensano la title track "Restless Heart" e "You're so fine" a rimettere le cose a posto. L'armonica e l'assolo stop&go di "Woman Trouble Blues" ricordano molto l'esperimento "Shake My Tree" con Jimmy Page, ma la qualità, malgrado l'impegno del bravo chitarrista Vandenberg, non sarà mai la stessa. Adrian si fa però sentire in diversi punti durante il resto dell'album. Nulla di innovativo comunque.
Molto bella la stampa sul disco, rispetto all'atona foto di Coverdale in copertina, un logo gotico con un cuore e una spada intrecciati a rose e spine, in toni di grigio argentato.Forse avrebbe meritato la copertina.
Tutto qui, alla fine "Restless Heart" serve più che altro per ricordare che gli Whitesnake e soprattutto Coverdale non riposano mai, ma anche per ricordare, se qualcuno storce il naso di fronte a queste deviazioni "slow", che Coverdale è rock duro, ma anche melodia.
