Gli Yes catturati nella loro nuova incarnazione dal regista canadese Steven Soderbergh.
Siamo nel 1984 e il gruppo l'anno prima aveva dato alle stampe il vendutissimo "90125" e non hanno più in oraganico nè Howe nè l'ingobrante Wakeman. I due sono sostituiti dal redivivo Tony Kaye e il chitarrista sud-africano Trevor Rabin per un suono molto pop-rock anni ottanta con qualche spolverata di havy rock, non c'è più traccia del vecchio suono prog, Trevor Horn ha resettato tutto (si ascolti il lavoro dei Buggles "Adventures In Modern Recording" del '81 per capire da dove nasca il suono di questi Yes).
Il dvd "9012 Live" riporta lo spettatore ad un periodo storico per la musica che lascia decisamente perplessi. Se si prende l'aspetto puramente musicale è interessante vedere all'opera questa formazione per capire come Trevor Rabin abbia di fatto preso per mano insieme a Squire il gruppo portandolo verso un suono orecchiabile, ammiccante con forti tinte da arena-rock, "Hold On", "It Can Happen", "City Of Love". Il gruppo suona e si diverte, Alan White integra la sua batteria con le percussioni elettroniche che sfoggia con grande orgoglio nella curiosa "Leave It", Rabin e Squire intrattengono il pubblico con movenze da band metal del periodo e Anderson? Fa la sua parte ma sembra decisamente fuori luogo e la senzazione che prevale è che i nuovi colori del suono Yes non li vadano molto a genio. Di negativo c'è il terribile look del gruppo, capelli cotonati e tinti di biondo platino (la cresta di Squire è orribile), vestiti sgargianti messi insieme con pessimo gusto e aria da zii dei Duran Duran difficile da digerire. Inoltre nei contenuti extra del dvd Soderbergh riprende il gruppo nel backstage; francamente sembrano dei ragazzini, parlano di 17enni in prima fila che ammiccano durante il concerto (Tony Kaye) e di stupidi scherzi da classe in gita (Trevor Rabin), una tristezza, il trionfo dell'edonismo anni '80 di una band che ha cavalcato in pieno l'era d'oro del rock e che in quel momento è pronta a lanciarsi nella commercialità contemporanea.
Un dvd utile ai fans, curioso, un bel film concerto e grandi esecuzioni ma la finta armonia ostentata dal gruppo è fastidiosa. Nelle interviste si può godere di Trevor Rabin che attacca i rivali degli "Asia", Squire e White raccontano gli anni di "Drama" e la genesi dello scioglimento del gruppo nel '81, tutto molto interessante ma per fan accaniti.
