Se "90125" era stato un trapasso spaziotemporale nell'universo Yes, il "Big Generator" conferma la direzione dell'equipaggio e guarda indietro, come se fossero anni luce, gli anni delle copertine di Roger Dean. Per gli inossidabili del classic-progressive è il quasi abbandono di ogni speranza.
Ecco... faranno la fine dei Genesis. Trevor Rabin resta e co-produce l'album. Tutto made in USA. E si sente. Gli Yes stelle e strisce comunque stanno ben lontani dal pop, proponendo comunque un prodotto ai loro livelli.
Dal 1983 hanno gozzovigliato tra i fasti del "90125", adesso il Trevor fa da motore trainante. Siamo nel 1987, fase vagante. Non si può dire che sono stati salvati dal grande chitarrista, ma certamente ha tenuto in moto sti signori inglesi, con già un carrierone alla spalle e lavori miliari del rock. C'era il rischio che buttassero l'ancora. Alan White in particolare.
Tutto suona implacabilmente freddo, suoni taglienti che faranno lavorare i tweeter delle vostre casse, tante chitarre hi-tech, hard-progressive curatissimo e a volte troppo complesso. I singoli estratti sono passati nell'indifferenza confrontati con l'epica "Owner of..", molto meno riusciti ma non da buttare. "Rhythm of Love" scorre bene e presenta globalmente il sound che arriverà tra i microsolchi. Energico.. sembra dire... siamo tornati !! Parentesi corali elaborate e riff che ti fa picchiettare il volante. Ovvia la perfezione in tutto, come ovvio dirlo.
Trevor Rabin dirige l'orchestra nel pieno rispetto delle colossali individualità. La "title track" fa aguzzare la mente essendo curiosa come composizione. Prog rock eccelso con cambi continui. La seguente "Shoot High Aim Low" forse è il brano migliore. Splendida e trascinante. Pur avendo una ritmica blanda coinvolge all'ascolto con innumerevoli sfumature. "Almost like love" è un pezzo nevrotico con le consuete alchimie Yes del periodo. Assolo di Rabin molto tecnico.
"Love will find a way" è l'altro singolo. Ballata dalla "semplice", teniamo presente il contesto, intonazione molto commerciale preceduta da un'inutile intro di archi. I due brani seguenti "Final Eyes", "I'M Running" dovrebbero intenerire i nostalgici del "Close to the Edge" e similari. Lo stile Yes classico suonato in chiave moderna. Melodie molto belle e spazio al virtuosismo. Delizie per qualsiasi musicista. Su "I'm running" il prog si esaspera ulteriormente portando all'estremo la creatività. Serve qualche ascolto ripetuto. "Holy Lamb" rimbocca le coperte all'ascoltatore, in parte torturato dai suoni seghettati dell'insieme.
Big Generator è il secondo dei tre capitoli della trilogia Rabin. Sarebbe stato impossibile ricreare un "90125", la via scelta è quella di bilanciare il nuovo con il vecchio. Alcuni brani sono molto meno immediati alla "Hold On". Gli Yes si stanno divertendo a suonare più Hard, ma senza abbandonare completamente le linee del passato. Andava ammorbidito il sound, ma il Trevor aveva carta bianca sugli arrangiamenti. La copertina è al minimo storico, ma il contenuto assolutamente no.
Affrontatelo con tranquillità, non è da buttare. Anzi.
