La tua ragazza ti ha lasciato? Peggio ancora, ti ha detto che è incinta di due mesi e sono tre mesi che non la trombi?? Qualcos'altro ti affligge??? "Going For The One", primo brano dell'album omonimo, non ti risolverà il problema ma ti toglierà dalla disperazione per 5 minuti e 32 secondi. 

Ci sono album che vale la pena di comprare solo per la grandiosa bellezza di un brano (scrivo comprare facendo finta che non esiste internet), come ad esempio "On An Island" di Daviddone Jhon Gilmour per il pezzo omonino o "World Record "dei VDGG per la fantastica "Mergluys III". "Going For The One" è uno di questi album. L'originalità della melodia e dell'arrangiamento, il ritmo trascinante lo rendono un brano che ad ascoltarlo si va in estasi.

1977: gli Yes hanno superato l'apice della loro produzione, sta iniziando la fase discendente della parabola artistica (Loro, faro del progressive), Bill Bruford non fa più parte della mitica formazione. Il loro sound, lo Yessound, è davvero unico, merito soprattutto dell'abbinamento di una voce particolare ad ampio spettro quale quella di John Anderson, del talento del chitarrista Steve Howe, di Rick Wakeman alle tastiere e di Chris Squire al basso, alla bravura e originalità di Bill Bruford personalmente ritenuto uno dei più virtuosi batteristi rock ed il più bravo nel progressive. Merito dell'originale modo di intrecciare strumenti solisti a formare armonia complessa ma facile da ascoltare.
Condivido pienamente un noto prontuario sul progressive che indica gli Yes ai vertici di un triangolo equilatero posto una spanna più alto di tutti gli altri pur bravi gruppi di tal genere musicale. Agli altri due vertici King Crimson e Genesis. Lo Yessound è brioso, sprizza vivacità da tutti i pori (fa eccezione solo l'incidente di percorso noto come "Tales From Topographic Oceans") ed in questo si pone all'estremo opposto del cupo sound dei Van Der Graaf.

Dicevo di "Going For The One", inizio sfavillante di album, che riesce a suscitare in me quell'ebbrezza che provo solo, restando nella produzione Yes, ascoltando "Close To The Edge". La struttura è originale, tipica del progressive che ha inizio con la strofa che ha un che di geniale, imperioso. L'inciso è leggermente banale, ma fa da ripartenza al ritornello vero e proprio che presenta uno spettacolare labirinto di suoni dove la voce di Anderson (ecco un'altra originalità) fa il contrario del normale: fa da rete musicale in cui si intrecciano avvicendandosi chitarra, basso e tastiere solisteggianti (provare ad ascoltare quel passaggio ponendo l'attenzione su tutto quello che non è voce). Il finale è un'altra perla, con i suoi stacchi ritmici e cori. Ok per i puristi del prog può essere considerata una "canzone". Ma una canzone complessa come solo il prog può inventarsi. Di un peso specifico, cioè intensità fratto tempo, che supera il "Nettunio". 

Degno di nota è anche il secondo brano "Turn Of The Century", dove Jan sfoggia le sue capacità vocali, egregiamente accompagnato da chitarra acustica e piano, in crescendo. Gli altri brani a seguire ("Parallels" hi-light -  "Wonderous Stories" insipido - "Awaken" suite senza infamia e senza lode) non raggiungono la sufficienza. La suite in particolare, per la sua inconsistenza, ricorda molto gli sconclusionati pezzi di "Tales From Topographic Oceans".

Purtroppo l'album presenta il difetto di quasi tutta la produzione Yes e cioè che la qualità del suono è scarsa, la registrazione lascia a desiderare. La copertina è diversa nello stile dalle altre disegnate da Roger Dean, è il segno dei tempi, il romanticismo che lascia il passo ad altri generi dei commerciali anni '80.  

Ascoltatelo, gente, magari ad alto volume. Magari programmate solo i primi due pezzi al vostro lettore, magari anche solo il primo per darvi la carica. Saranno magici momenti di musica ai massimi livelli.

 Going for the one, ultimo capolavoro della band, è il perfetto esempio di equilibrio e sintesi fra il passato e il futuro della band.

 Il brano Awaken sembra spegnersi quasi all’improvviso ma da lontano emerge una melodia emessa dalle percussioni accordate di White, dando vita a un crescendo strepitoso.
