Ciao a tutti. La mia prima recensione.
Allora diamo "un'occhiata" a questo lavoro dei grandi Yes del 1997. Segna un'altra transizione sia di formazione che di tipologia ispirativa. Dopo un buco di tre anni gli aficionados sono a secco da "Talk" del 1994. A mio avviso un capolavoro del progressive. Differenze? Adesso il buon Trevor Rabin non c'è più. Il musicista che ha dato un gran contributo e freschezza da "90125" sino appunto a "Talk" fa le valige e si dedica a tempo pieno a progetti di creazione di colonne sonore. Tra le molte "Armageddon" ad es. Da quel momento gli Yes li sente ogni tanto per telefono.
"Open your Eyes" è un buon lavoro. Se vogliamo un ibrido. Non c'è una hit, si aggrega in modo più visibile Billy Sherwood che deve "coprire" il Rabin. È un buon chitarrista ma siamo ad anni luce dal Trevor. Fa un pò di tutto, arrangia, canta, tastiere e session man in tour. Un bravo ragazzo che non rompe tanto le scatole ai "feudatari" del suono e della storica tradizione. Insomma.. la sventagliata di zucchero a velo sulla torta della nonna. La musica... è Yes.
Un piede nel passato e l'altro in avanti. Chi non li conosce non lo apprezzerà molto. È immediato ad orecchi già rodati a dovere per cogliere completamente le sfumature. Tutto è molto brillante. Steve Howe si da un gran daffare e apre parecchie custodie di chitarre della sua infinita collezione. Ci sono delle belle sonorità. Suona come un ragazzino. Ed è un maestro. Jon Anderson detto l'Highlander dell'ugola canta come 20 anni prima se non anche meglio, il bassman Squire sempre sulla cresta e Alan White dà sempre lezioni di batteria senza strafare. Scelte di gusto in tutti i brani, anche se non tutti eccelsi. C'è anche Igor Khoroshev, un giovane russo discepolo di Wakeman, che suona come lui. L'ho visto dal vivo e confermo. C'è anche un aiutino di Steve Porcaro della dinastia Toto che contribuisce sulla title track. Vecchi amici del giro grosso, non c'è altra spiegazione. Agli Yes non servirebbe nessuno. La parte centrale di chitarra spagnoleggiante su "Innuendo" dei Queen è del buon Howe. Tanto per dire.
Vi nomino i brani secondo me degni di nota... "New State of Mind" è il top del cd. Energia Yes allo stato puro, da ascoltare a tutto volume. Bellissima. Cori da paura. Se qualcuno ha qualche dubbio sul valore tecnico artistico su questo gruppo che stia zitto. L'hanno fatta apposta per ricordarlo. Segue degnamente "Open Your Eyes" che tiene il tiro però già più semplice. Da single track. "Universal Garden" ci fa trasognare come "I'm Running" del 1987. "Man in the Moon" è il minimo sindacale degli Yes, una ballatina da ascoltare in auto e canticchiare. Piacevole nella sua semplicità. "From the Balcony" è la caramellina. Una serenata zuccherosa di Howe e Anderson scritta in una sera in albergo. Da spiaggia. Melodia classica Yesstyle. Le altre ci stanno e anche bene. Niente di che per l'universo Yes.
Se non si ha niente degli Yes, meglio cominciare da "Fragile" e dopo questo. Oppure "Talk" e dopo "Open Your Eyes". Stà lì da semaforo tra due ere degli irraggiungibili Yes. Ma il neofita non deve prenderlo da solo. Va abbinato come una rivista. Grazie per l'attenzione.. Joe
