Il Reggae e non solo.
Ziggy Marley, classe 1968 è il primo figlio maschio di Bob Marley. Dopo aver fatto parte per quasi due decenni dei Melody Makers insieme al fratello Stephen e le sorelle Cedella e Sharon nel 2003 decide di approdare alla carriera solista con quest' album di debutto.
"Dragonfly" è un ottimo disco nel quale Ziggy dà prova di proseguire il discorso in parte iniziato con i Melody Makers e cioè non rimanere ancorato solo ed esclusivamente alla musica Reggae.
Ci troviamo di fronte ad un disco poliedrico, dove è senza dubbio presente la matrice Reggae, ma a quest'ultima si accompagnano buone dosi di Rock, ottimo Pop e pennellate di un ibrido tra Hip/Hop e R&B.
Anche per quel che riguarda la parte più prettamente musico-strumentale Ziggy dà buona dimostrazione di non essere schiavo del genere giamaicano, ma anzi di portarlo a nuova vita, contaminandolo con delle gustosissime chitarre distorte, suoni di rullante decisamente rock e ottimi arrangiamenti ora funky,ora addirittura jazzy.
Supportato da un'ottima produzione e dalla partecipazione di John Frusciante e Flea (RHCP) e Mike Einziger e DJ Kilmore (Incubus) passiamo da momenti profondi e toccanti solo voce e chitarra, arricchiti da arrangiamenti di piano e tromba che regalano al pezzo un vago sapore di jazz (Melancholy Mood) a momenti solari e vivacissimi (Good Old Days e Rainbow in the Sky) nei quali il timbro vocale di David "Ziggy" la fà da padrone e ci fà sorprendere di quanto sia simile la voce del figlio comparata con quella dell'illustre padre.
Ziggy non fà mistero dei suoi credi politici e religiosi nei due ottimi rock di "In the Name of God" dove si scaglia senza mezzi termini contro la religione usata per fomentare odio, tema oggi sempre più attuale e sull'urgenza di pace in "Shalom Salaam" parole che rispettivamente in ebraico e arabo significano pace.
Ancora l'ottima accattivante "True to Myself" quasi un auto-manifesto di intenti e il funky-reggae di "I Get Out" che nel ritornello diventa decisamente rock è una dichiarazione di autonomia in tono polemico verso chi all'interno del music business vede il nostro come artista-merce per via del celeberrimo cognome.
Sorpresa delle sorprese l'ultima traccia "Don't You Kill Love" è un'ottima canzone con un bel vestito di elettronica addosso che la rende estremamente particolare e sinuosa.
In definitiva, un album consigliato perchè abbatte coi fatti tanti preconcetti che un ascoltatore potrebbe avere di fronte ad un artista che si chiama Ziggy Marley, e che mentalmente viene subito assocciato ad un determinato genere e modo di interpretare la musica.
Se vi fidate date un ascolto a questo disco che sono quasi sicuro vi potrà far ricredere e conoscere un artista dotato di talento.
