A distanza di più di tre anni, tornano gli AFI (A Fire Inside) con il nuovo lavoro: "Decemberunderground".
Il successore di "Sing The Sorrow", ha un compito non facile, vista l'eccelsa qualità del suo predecessore che lanciò il quartetto di Ukiah tra le band alternative rock più talentuose del panorama. Innanzi tutto, occorre dire che, ancora una volta, la band ha intrapreso una svolta musicale, allontanandola ancora di più dal dark-punk degli inizi, per raggiungere vie alternative, a cavallo tra le nuove tendenze hardcore e lo stile, ormai classico, di band dark wave anni 80.
Venendo più specificamente al nuovo lavoro, occorre dire che la missione di produrre un lavoro degno delle aspettative è riuscito. "Decemberunderground" è un ottimo lavoro, pieno di ispirazione e classe, che la band suddivide tra le dodici tracce dell'album. Si comincia con l'ormai immancabile intro: "Prelude 12/21", subito capace di immergere l'ascoltatore nell'atmosfera che va subito definendosi con "Kill Caustic" e il singolo "Miss Murder".
La seguente "Summer Shudder" regala uno spaccato dei nuovi AFI in versione rock senza mai rinunciare ai cori che da sempre li caratterizzano. Occorre attendere fino ad "Affliction" per tornare a sentire gli echi del passato punk della band, che lascia un po' spiazzati, quando regala un brano come "The Missing Frame", quasi uscito da una jam session con i The Killers, ma con molta più classe.
Il disco, scivola via, senza mai perdere di intensità con "The Killing Lights" e "37mm", per poi esplodere nel finale malinconico e toccante di "Endlessly, she said". Musicalmente, molti potrebbero portare obiezioni, ma l'universo dgli AFI è molto più che sola musica, perchè come al solito, sono i testi a fare la differenza.
"Decemberunderground" regala attimi di intensa partecipazione sentimentale, che alla lunga, sfociano in senso di liberazione e comunione con il song writer/cantante Davey Havok. Per concludere, il nuovo lavoro delgi AFI, non eclissa "Sing The Sorrow", ma è da aggiungere a tutti gli effetti alla saga del dolore, cantato con splendida delicatezza dai quattro musicisti californiani.
