Gli A Fire Inside incarnano una realtà anomala nell'affollato sottobosco punk & hardcore americano. Partendo da una base punk/hc iniziale, sono giunti sopratutto negli ultimi due dischi a notevoli stravolgimenti, avvicinandosi con vigore al rock e facendosi sempre più contaminare da suoni new wave e gothic.
Partiamo col dire, che "Decemberunderground" non si distanzia molto dal precedente "Sing The Sorrow", sebbene sia avvenuto un ulteriore dimunizione dei giri del motore, per dare ancora più spazio alla melodia.
Le schegge hardcore di pezzi come "Dancing through sunday" risultano quasi assenti e l'opener (che segue una funebre intro) "Kill caustic", una mistura di screaming, partiture veloci e atmosfere lugubri risulta insieme all'altra ottimamente riuscita "Affliction" delle apprezzabili eccezioni.
Per il resto siamo distanti anni luce da un disco di pura matrice punk, essendo quest'ultima fatica assimilabile, come già indicato ascrivibile a tutti gli effetti come un puro disco rock.
Il singolo "Miss murder" mostra il volto più commerciale degli AFI, tant'è che è arduo dire se sia un bel pezzo o un cartonato precostruito per scalare le classifiche. Tuttavia rimane un pezzo dal discreto tiro, con forse il difetto, valutate voi quanto grave, di eccessiva ridondanza, per la costante ripetitività dei ritornelli (ben 4 in poco più di tre minuti di canzone) e dell'ultima parta urlata fuori luogo.
In quanto ad orecchiabilità ed appeal non scherzano nemmeno i 2' 47" di "Love like winter", che sopra un'intelaiatura quasi elettronica, rievoca dei tetri quadretti autunnali. Non mancano nemmeno i vari lenti, sebbene episodi noiosi come "Endlessly, she said" rimangono totalmente distanti dal fascino emotivo che poteva generare una hit come "The leaving song pt.2".
Mentre il nuovo corso è degnamene rappresentato da "Summer shudder" una delle poche che si eleva sulle altre, su cui fanno capolino cori e un refrain da sing-along e la cappa oscura che avvolge l'album, per qualche minuto vola via.
Il resto dei pezzi segnano un distacco deciso verso il passato. Ed è qui che la band mostra il fianco con pezzi freddi come "Kiss and control" e "37mm", che mettono in luce un impasto di generi spesso mal amalgamato e vero punto debole dell'opera.
Due parole pure sul singer Davey Havok. Se, sul suo look dark, eclisso volentieri ogni discussione, perplessità invece permangono sulle sue diverse timbriche vocali, a tratti decisamente tediose e insopportabili.
"Decemberunderground" segue la strada aperta dal precedente approdo su major, con tutti i dubbi del caso, chi tuttavia aveva apprezzato il precedente, si farà piacere anche l'ultimo arrivato.
Tuttavia, se un largo audience di pubblico ha verso di loro un atteggiamento di pura indifferenza, questo è in parte anche condivisibile. Del resto, con i vari Rise Against, primi Thrice e Ignite, per fare qualche nome, gli AFI se ne possono stare tranquillamente in compagnia dei loro fantasmi e spettri.
