A nove anni da Moon Safari, acclamato debutto del duo francese più vezzeggiato dalla critica mondiale, gli Air ritornano con un album che alcuni potrebbero definire "transitorio", anche se dopo attento ascolto l'impressione è che Nicolas Godin e Jean-Benoît Dunckel siano tuttora legati alla formula che li ha resi unici fino dagli esordi.
Le atmosfere sognanti e smaliziate di Sexy Boy e Kelly Watch The Stars - i singoli di punta contenuti in Moon Safari - hanno indicato ai nostri una via dalla quale raramente si sono discostati. Rispetto all'evidente cifra autarchica del precedente disco Talkie Walkie, dove i due avevano cantato con scarsi risultati tutte le parti maschili, le dodici tracce di Pocket Symphony si delineano come una sorta di colonna sonora per un film ancora da scrivere.
I brani maggiormente compiuti, seppure prevedibili nel loro sviluppo, sono le due ballate One Hell Of A Party e Somewhere Between Waking And Sleeping, rispettivamente affidate a Jarvis Cocker, ex cantante dei Pulp, e a Neil Hannon dei Divine Comedy. La cartella stampa di Pocket Symphony, la cui uscita è prevista per i primi di marzo, ci informa inoltre che Nicolas Godin ha appreso da un maestro di Okinawa come allietarci con caratteristici strumenti orientali: un'arpa (Koto) e una sorta di banjo (Shamisen) molto popolari in Giappone.
Il singolo Once Upon A Time è il tipico biglietto da visita degli Air: un pianoforte posto a sostegno dell'intera impalcatura, una drum-machine tanto discreta quanto insipida, un testo che a definirlo naif gli si fa un piacere e il solito inglese storpiato dei nostri eroi. Dunckel e Godin non si smentiscono mai, e agli incauti ascoltatori restano due alternative: sottrarsi ai loro sterili esercizi di stile o lasciarsi irretire per l'ennesima volta, con la consapevolezza che gli Air di nove anni fa sono ormai un ricordo sbiadito.

Tutte le canzoni tengono in rilassatezza l'ascoltatore e i brani da sette minuti che potrebbero annoiare non ci sono più.
Pocket Symphony è un tentativo di tornare alle origini, e se questo è il punto di partenza, non sono messi male.
