La scena Doom Metal inglese formata da Paradise Lost, Anathema e My Dying Bride dopo il 95 (anno apice del movimento basta citare titoli come Draconian Times, The Silent Enigma e The Angel And The Dark River) inizia a cambiare profondamente. Nel giro di due anni solo i My Dying Bride decidono di proseguire lungo quella strada.
Gli Anathema invece dopo un album di transizione come Alternative 4 (comunque un capolavoro) giungono nel 99 a Judgement.
Un disco che vale cento volte la maggior parte dei dischi che vengono vomitati sul mercato discografico odierno.
Un'opera emotiva, intensa e profonda immersa in un atmosfera cupa e disarmante.
Brani come FORGOTTEN HOPES, DESTINY IS DEAD, EMOTIONAL WINTER sono qualcosa che non può essere descritto, ma che deve essere semplicemente ascoltato, vissuto.
Le uniche tracce che, sebbene non possa rendere assolutamente l'idea a parole, mi permetto di sovrapporre alle altre sono la straziante ONE LAST GOODBYE brano su cui a fatica si riescono a trattenere le lacrime segnato dalla stupenda e commovente interpretazione di Vincent Cavanagh e da un testo tra i più belli mai scritti dal gruppo Inglese, e la title-track JUDGEMENT una progressione ritmica continua che esplode in autentico caos sonoro con una potenza che non ha nulla da invidiare ai tempi in cui gli Anathema potevano definirsi una band Heavy Metal.
In definitiva un disco che rasenta la perfezione assoluta e testimonianza della evoluzione stilistica di una band che aldilà dei mezzi utilizzati resta ancorata a quell'immaginario di malinconia e disperazione che da sempre ha caratterizzato la sua produzione e come presumibilmente sempre farà.
