¡Alfaro Vive, Carajo!
Gli At The Drive-In si ripresentano sulle scene con la loro seconda uscita, un EP di quattro brani dall'appena accennato titolo che porta lo stesso nome di un movimento clandestino Ecuadoriano di sinistra dei primi anni '80. Noi siamo nel giugno 1995.
Arrivano dopo un buon ma ancora troppo acerbo "Hell Paso" e con un cambio nella formazione: Davy Simmons sostituisce Bernie Rancun alla batteria, mentre alla voce troviamo il leggendario Cedric Bixler-Zavala, alle chitarre Jarrett Wrenn e l'altro membro storico Jim Ward, al basso Kenny Hopper.
Una line-up che sembrava stabile ma successivamente Wrenn e Hopper abbandoneranno per formare i Crime In Choir, band Math Rock strumentale; entreranno poi nuovi membri per quello che sarà il primo full-length "Acrobatic Tenement", quali Omar Rodríguez-López.
I texani di El Paso sono ragazzi con tanta rabbia adolescenziale in circolo, tutti più o meno sulla 20ina e si denota una forte ricerca del "proprio Io" come membri individuali ma soprattutto come collettivo musicale. Si può vedere e, in particolare, si sente.
Partono subito in quarta con brani "ad alta velocità": se "Bradley Smith" si presenta con una forte influenza Emocore, con "Instigate The Role" i toni si fanno più duri e più Post-Hardcore. In quest'ultimo brano c'è un netto miglioramento negli arrangiamenti, a partire da ciò che succede dietro le pelli della new entry Davy Simmons; abbastanza articolata rispetto all'opener, con Bixler-Zavala pronto a cimentarsi in altre tecniche vocali, gli scream per esempio, sebbene ancora di mediocre qualità.
Continua sulla falsa riga la dissonante violenza sonora di "Ludvico Drive-In", molto caratterizzata dai cori femminili di Laura Beard e Sarah Reiser, amiche di Bixler-Zavala morte tragicamente due anni dopo in un incidente stradale. Episodio di cui parlerà in "Napoleon Solo", tra i brani chiave di "In/Casino/Out".
La svolta avviene nell'ultima traccia "Circuit Scene": i toni inizialmente si smorzano, sono dolci e malinconici, accompagnati dai cori maschili di Jim Ward stavolta... poi esplode tutto, la batteria suona la carica assurda, molteplici voci iniziano a sbraitare, basso e chitarre smettono di essere minimali e comincia una vera e propria fiera in stile At The Drive-In. La vera perla di questa release.
Stanno arrivando... o meglio, stavano per arrivare!
