Beth Gibbons, con i Portishead ormai in stand-by da anni, pubblicò questo disco nel 2002, in compagnia di Rustin' Man. è un disco molto lontano dal trip-hop, dai ritmi hip hop rallentati, dalle delusioni e dai dolori, ma è comunque molto affascinante, a partire dall'iniziale "Mysteries", gemma acustica, una signor ballata dark, non a caso scelta come primo singolo: un pezzo di bellezza assoluta che punta alla rarefatezza e alla scarnezza dei suoni: solo una chitarra acustica in procinto ad eseguire una melodia irresistibile, la voce di Beth che accarezza e aleggia con emozioni perspicaci e un poco oscure ed un coro poco percettibile, tanto prewar folk anni '40.
Ancora bellezza nella seguente "Tom The Model", il pezzo più incline al trip hop, ma ancora lontano anni luce, è ravvivato da una ritmica molto originale ed è impossibile non riascoltarla due volte.
Il resto del disco è un caleidoscopio di pezzi jazzati, su cui spicca òa straordinaria "Romance", un pezzo che a dispetto del titolo non suona come una canzone d'amore, quanto un pezzo che mette dolore, con quella voce profonda in grado di strappare i cuori, da infondere dolore, ma anche ammirazione. Una parata di pezzi jazz più o meno riusciti, dal quale si differiscono i primi due pezzi e "Resolve", acustica e breve, ma una gran canzone sicuramente, "Funny Time Of The Year", vertice dell'arte di Beth: un sogno/incubo in cui gli strumenti si rincorrono in un crescendo di splendore assoluto e la meno riuscita, ma creativa "Rustin Man" che vira pericolosamente in un ambient sognante.
Un ottimo disco, da non dimenticare, per sognare, dimenticare le preoccupazioni e godersi un po' di arte
