Mi sembra non ci sia ancora una recensione di questo disco, che per il mio modesto giudizio può essere inserito tra le migliori uscite del 2005.
Partiamo dal presupposto che chi scrive ha un debole per questa importante band capitanata da un grande personaggio, tale Zakk Wylde, chitarrista fenomenale, voce piena di stile e carismatico frontman di questo gruppo (che tra l'altro annovera un bassista di gran livello, James LoMenzo). Presentata la squadra che ci offre questa musica, si parli allora di essa stessa!
"Mafia" si apre come meglio non potrebbe, con una "Fire It Up" che rende subito chiari, a chi non conoscesse già la band, gli ingredienti che formano la portata perfetta per ogni true-metal fan che si rispetti: chitarra pesante e virtuosa, ritmica precisa nello scandire i tempi di matrice heavy e una voce che trapassa le budella per quanto è rude e avvelenata, restando comunque piacevole. Continua, aggredendo con maggiore forza, con "What's In You" rimanendo sempre nei canoni del genere dai Black Label proposto. Già ora si può quindi fare una considerazione: la musica presente in questa release è sempre quella che abbiamo con piacere trovato nelle precedenti uscite di questo gruppo.
Non ci sono brutte sorprese come assurde pretese di sperimentazione, questa è una band che porta l'heavy metal tradizionale a nuovi livelli, rimanendo ancorata a uno stile di vita rock, fatto di birra, harley davidson e canzoni di semplice presa ma di enorme consistenza. Questo disco non vi tradisce mai, non c'è una canzone che non valga la pena di essere ascoltata fino in fondo, ed è un album pieno di capolavori come i due pezzi già sopracitati ai quali aggiungerei senza troppi problemi "Forever Down", "You Must Be Blind", "Death March" e "Too Tough To Die" senza dimenticare l'ottava traccia "Dr. Octavia" interamente dedicata ad un assolo di Wylde nel quale sembra di sentire una turbina entrare in funzione e spingere al massimo... cosa non potrebbe tirar fuori da una chitarra questo barbuto individuo!!
Passo ora a commentare il pezzo anomalo del disco, anomalo perchè non affine al clima di velocità e violenza del resto del disco, ma invece malinconico, melodico e semplicemente bellissimo... "in This River" ci presenta Zakk Wylde al pianoforte, posizione forse non perfettamente congeniale all'ubriaco frontman, ma nella quale non smette di regalare emozioni, stavolte più intime e emozionanti. Una ballata semplice ma toccante, un testo scarno ma significativo, un momento di riposo all'interno del disco. Un pezzo quindi tanto anomalo quanto fondamentale per sottolineare ancora una volta la grandezza di questo "Mafia", un motivo in più per flagellarvi il basso ventre qualora ve lo siate lasciato sfuggire e per quindi imboccare l'uscio e correre a fare vostro uno dei capolavori più genuini dell'anno passato.
In mezzo a tanti lavori complicati più o meno riusciti ecco una boccata d'aria fresca davvero desiderata!

È imbarazzante come questo disco neanche prova ad aggiungere qualcosa al percorso musicale della band.
Un buon disco che avrebbe preso 5 se fosse stato dimezzato in lunghezza per via dei numerosi riempitivi.
