E' il 1994 e ormai si sta scrivendo il capitolo finale dei Black Sabbath. Ma Tony Iommi ha ancora voglia - o forse testardaggine - e da vita a questo Cross Purposes, un buon album a cui forse manca qualcosa, quella "mano" di Dio - Ronnie James per intenderci - che si era riproposto con i Sabbath col precedente Dehumanizer, a distanza di 12 anni dal mitico Heaven and Hell. Senza nulla togliere al buon Tony Martin che è senz'altro un ottimo vocalist, ma Dio è appunto un dio e non ha rivali. La formazione oltre ai già citati Martin e Iommi, presenta lo storico bassista Geezer Butler e, esordiente nel gruppo, il batterista Bobby Rondinelli.
Parlando dell'album ci si accorge subito dall'energetica opener "I Witness" che i Sabbath anche questa volta non ci deluderanno. E' un genere di pezzo classico dei Sabbath post-Ozzy, con Rondinelli che tiene alta la tensione dall'inizio alla fine. Con "Cross of Thorns" i nostri sembrano calmarsi, anche se nuovamente Butler e Rondinelli la fanno ancora da padrone, con uno Iommi che resta quasi in disparte fino al proverbiale assolo, che però non ha molte pretese. In effetti tutto è retto da un ottimo Martin che da tanta enfasi al pezzo. E' forse una delle sue migliori interpretazioni. Arriva "Psycophobia" ed il titolo dice tutto: è un pezzo quasi schizofrenico, decisamente poco stile Sabbath, oserei dire quasi thrash, e non lascia molto.
Tutto ciò ci introduce a "Virtual Death". Il sound sembra quello: una batteria che lenta martella senza sosta, una chitarra distorta, un basso cupo. Questi sono i veri Sabbath.
Il culmine arriva quando ad accompagnare uno stralunato e cattivo Martin resta il solo Butler:"People Always Tried To Change Me, Alter Everying I Am,Though You Find This So Amusing, You Left Me In This State I'm In. Virtual Death". Il migliore pezzo dell'album.
Dopo tutto ciò partono le prime note di "Immaculate Deception", ed ancora una volta i Sabbath sanno stupire. Finalmente si sente il vero Iommi, che spezza un ritmo travolgente con un assolo degno del suo nome.
Per anni e anni i Black Sabbath hanno usato sempre lo stesso schema standard, perchè cambiare? Ed ecco che arriva allora la solita ballad: "Dying for Love". Introduce un languido quanto ispirato Iommi, continua un eccellente Martin. Un bel pezzo, che accellera nel finale, certo non il miglior lento dei Sabbath, ma si fa ben volentieri ascoltare.
"Back to Eden" ci ridà energia e predica buonismo:"The Power Of Peace Can Destroy The Gun..", ma è anche cinica:"The Human Race Will Never Learn".In "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" Iommi da prova della sua bravura ma nulla più. Anche in "Cardinal Sin" troviamo un sound più Sabbath-classic, ma è un po' forzata e non è niente di che. Si conclude con "Evil Eye", alla quale si dice abbia strettamente collaborato Eddie Van Halen. Vuole essere forse un seguito di Evil Woman (People say the woman's got an evil eye. Got hell looking up, heaven looking down, free me from the woman with the evil eye), ma chissà... è comunque un pezzo standard dei Sabbath, senza pretese ma abbastanza orecchiabile.
A favore dell'album c'è il fatto che i Black Sabbath non hanno mai buttato quattro note e un testo insieme, e quindi su questo versante non possiamo che ottenere una certa qualità: testi - quasi - sempre sensati e coerenti e un'ottima produzione discografica.
A sfavore c'è il fatto che siamo nel 1994, e questo hard rock è stato troppo strasfruttato: ad essere onesti i Black Sabbath sono già superati da un pò di tempo. Iommi e company non si daranno per vinti e ci riproveranno parecchie altre volte, specialmente con l'ultimo studio-album Forbidden del 1995, e con un Live, Reunion, con l'originale formazione Iommi-Osbourne-Butler-Ward nel 1998.
Recentemente Ozzy ha detto che non ha intenzione di ritornare in studio con i Black Sabbath perchè non si farebbe altro che gettare fango sui mitici lavori degli anni '70. Parole sante!

La risposta è sì: i Black Sabbath riuscirono a muoversi tra ere musicali molto diverse senza stravolgere la propria proposta.
"Cross Purposes" si rivela un piacevole disco di hard rock melodico, che però a volte mostra segnali di stanchezza in fase compositiva.
