Inutile girarci troppo intorno, quando i Black Sabbath a fine anni Settanta si separano per l'ennesima volta da un Ozzy ormai perso nei suoi problemi, nessuno avrebbe scommesso troppo su un ritorno in pompa magna dei quattro di Birmingham. L'ultima prova in studio, "Never Say Die!", è stata un mezzo flop e la popolarità non è più quella di un tempo. Ronnie James Dio, italo-americano di New York con un glorioso passato nei Rainbow di Ritchie Blackmore, però è l'uomo giusto al momento giusto. Con una voce ed un'attitudine completamente differenti da quelle del suo predecessore, il cantante porta nuova linfa ad un gruppo ormai sull'orlo del collasso, riuscendo a traghettare il quartetto verso sonorità più vicine alla scena heavy metal del periodo, svecchiando enormemente una proposta musicale che ormai iniziava a mostrare la corda. La lavorazione del primo album figlio di questo sodalizio è travagliata, Geezer Butler, colonna portante dei Sabs, non è sicuro di rimanere, costringendo gli altri a trovare di volta in volta qualcuno che lo sostituisca. Alla fine la crisi, l'ennesima, rientra e, finalmente, arriva nei negozi nel 1980 "Heaven And Hell", album che avrebbe fatto la storia del genere, diventando un vero e proprio punto di riferimento per le generazioni future e di fatto ridando vita ad una formazione che in molti, forse in troppi, davano ormai per spacciata. I testi, di stampo fantastico e pieni di metafore, sono tutti farina del sacco di Dio, e contribuiscono a donare alla nuova incarnazione dei Sabbath un sapore epico che le precedenti, per forza di cose, non avevano e che avrebbe avuto un'influenza non secondaria sulla scena epic metal che sarebbe nata da lì a breve. Il successivo "Mob Rules", dell'anno dopo, nonostante la dipartita di un Bill Ward ormai irrecuperabile, continua sulla falsariga del disco precedente, non eguagliandone il livello, ma mostrando comunque dei musicisti in stato di grazia. Quale occasione migliore per dare finalmente alle stampe un album dal vivo, il primo della lunga carriera degli inglesi? "Live Evil", uscito nel 1982, nelle intenzioni avrebbe dovuto suggellare un biennio di successi, in realtà si ritroverà ad essere l'epitaffio di questa ennesima versione del gruppo, con il quartetto di fatto già sciolto ancor prima che il disco arrivasse nei negozi. Cosa era successo? Andiamo con ordine. La suggestiva copertina, con ogni personaggio che rappresenta un classico del Sabba Nero, introduce un album che mostra i Sabs al massimo della forma, come forse non accadeva dai tempi d'oro. Tra i quattro c'è una buona alchimia, o almeno così parrebbe, e le arene stracolme sono la conferma che si sta andando nella giusta direzione. I Black Sabbath con Dio non sono quelli con Ozzy, volendo li si potrebbe considerare quasi un gruppo a parte, anche grazie alla forte personalità di Ronnie James, ma va bene così, lamentarsi di album come "Heaven And Hell" sarebbe una follia. La scaletta si divide egregiamente tra classici vecchi e nuovi, naturalmente con i pezzi tratti da "Mob Rules" che si impongono sugli altri. Dove è il problema? Il dischetto in questione è sì registrato dal vivo ma alle volte si ha quasi l'impressione che si stia ascoltando un album in studio al quale è stato poi aggiunto il rumore del pubblico. A discapito del nome, infatti, "Live Evil" risulterà essere uno degli album "dal vivo" maggiormente ritoccati della storia del rock'n'roll, il risultato finale di una serie infinita di "aggiustini" che creeranno più di un dissidio all'interno del gruppo e che avranno, come risultato finale, che il caro Ronnie James, da sempre un personaggio non troppo facile, se ne andrà sbattendo la porta portandosi dietro il sodale Vinny Appice. Indipendentemente dalle manomissioni, rimane il fatto che "Live Evil", ad oltre trent'anni dalla sua pubblicazione, sia un album affascinante, paradossalmente anche grazie a questo suono così "particolare", autentica summa di un periodo d'oro, la prima "era Dio", irripetibile e che vedeva davvero i Black Sabbath tornare ad imporsi come uno dei nomi "pesanti" della scena rock mondiale. Inutile dire che Dio interpreta i brani da lui scritti in maniera magistrale, mentre invece sembra risultare un po' freddino e distaccato quando si ritrova a cantare i brani pensati per Ozzy, ma è indubbio che la sua versione di "Black Sabbath" sia una delle migliori, forse ancora più maligna e agghiacciante dell'originale. La lunga "Heaven And Hell", uno dei pochi pezzi in cui la presenza del pubblico è effettivamente tangibile, incorpora una "The Sign Of The Southern Cross" da encomio, sottolineando ancora una volta, casomai ce ne fosse stato bisogno, la grandezza di questa incarnazione dei Sabs. Gran finale, già ai tempi, affidato ai classici dei classici, ovvero "Paranoid" e "Children Of The Grave". La dipartita di Dio mette definitivamente la parola "fine" ad una relativa stabilità all'interno dei Black Sabbath: da quel momento, infatti, si sarebbe succeduti cambi di formazione continui ma, va riconosciuto, la qualità delle opere in studio sarebbe rimasta pressoché immutata. Nonostante lo smacco, Tony Iommi e Geezer Butler avrebbero deciso di andare avanti, ritrovandosi a mettere in piedi una nuova formazione alquanto discutibile, con un Ian Gillan più interessato alla reunion dei Deep Purple che ad essere l'ennesimo cantante dei Black Sabbath e richiamando, non si sa francamente perché, all'ovile persino Bill Ward, ormai dedito più alla bottiglia che alla batteria. Il risultato sarebbe stato "Born Again" del 1983 ma questa è davvero un'altra storia.
