Ultimamente sono in pieno trip da elettronica, per cui grande è stata la mia gioia nello scoprire un paio di settimane fa che i miei amati AFI (uno dei migliori gruppi hardcore punk con influenze gotiche degli ultimi tempi, almeno fino all'ultimo mediocre "Crash Love" del 2009) non erano del tutto defunti come ormai dopo tre anni di assoluto silenzio cominciavo a pensare, ma che il tanto talentuoso quanto poco maschio cantante Davey Havok e l'istrionico e ossigenato chitarrista Jade Pudgett hanno nel frattempo formato un progetto parallelo di musica elettronica denominato Blaqk Audio.
Il genere propinato dal duo è una specie di dance-techno con qualche spruzzatina di ambient, niente di trascendentalmente innovativo ma godibile assai e prodotto divinamente. I brani sono suonati esclusivamente con synth, tastiere e drum machine dal buon Padgett, che si dimostra a suo agio con questi nuovi strumenti almeno quanto lo era con la sua fida chitarra; su tutto si leva poi la splendida voce di Havok, che seppur distante dalla splendida versatilità nell'alternanza scream-melodico che lo caratterizzava fino a "Decemberunderground" riesce ancora a sorprendere.
L'atmosfera generale è più simile al recente "Crash Love" che ai fasti passati di "The Art of Drowning" e "Sing the Sorrow", ma il disco è tutt'altro che disprezzabile, con un suono elettronico molto stratificato e iperprodotto.
Gli episodi migliori sono la quarta traccia "Bitter for Sweet" (fantastico Pudgett) e la conclusiva ballad "Wake Up, Open the Door and Escape to the Sea", dove è ancora una volta la voce di Havok a farla da padrone.
Niente di miracoloso, ma un ascolto se lo merita senz'altro.
