I Blonde Redhead sono una formazione italo-giapponese, formata dai fratelli Amedeo e Simone Pace e dalla cantante Kazu Makino, che si è rivelata uno dei gruppi più interessanti della scena noise-rock degli ultimi anni. Il sound della band, di chiara inspirazione sonicyouthiana (tant'è vero che i primi due dischi dei nostri vengono prodotti dal batterista dei Sonic Youth, Steve Shelley) raggiunge il suo apice con l'ottimo "Fake Can Be Just As Good", terzo disco del gruppo che segna il matrimonio con la Touch And Go.
Dopo questo lavoro, però, qualcosa cambia nei Blonde Redhead. Seguendo la scia dei maestri Sonic Youth, i nostri, infatti, sembrano gradualmente abbandonare la loro matrice noise originaria per passare ad un indie-pop più maturo, che trova la sua definitiva consacrazione nel 2000, quando esce, sempre per la Touch And Go, il loro quinto album, "Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons".
Dieci pezzi, più una bonus track, che segnano la definitiva maturazione del gruppo e del loro sound. Dopo l'introduzione iniziale si incontrano, infatti, momenti sublimi come l'ipnotica "In Particular", "Melody Of Certain Three", che strizza l'occhio al recente passato noise, la ballad "Hated Because Of Great Qualities", "This Is Not", dalle sonorità scanzonate e iperveloci molto 70's e la bellissima "A Cure".
Il loro noise-rock, insomma, sembra stemperarsi, lasciando spazio a momenti più melodici ma non per questo meno originali, e un pezzo come "For The Damaged Mother", dove il solo pianoforte accompagna la voce eterea di Kazu Makino, ne è la riprova.
Ottimo album, quindi, questo "Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons", vivamente consigliato a tutti coloro che lo abbiamo perso, o comunque un ottimo punto di partenza per conoscere i Blonde Redhead, un lavoro intimista e delicato che non finirà di sorprendervi ad ogni ascolto.

Non è facile classificare la loro musica, né azzardare accostamenti con altri gruppi esistenti.
Se avete modo, ascoltatevelo, secondo me è un disco sottovalutato e poco conosciuto!

Kazu è una sirena che ha perso il punto d'approdo ed è sperduta in mezzo ad una tempesta di onde devastanti.
