Siamo nel 1991 ed i Bonfire, gruppo tedesco reduce da tre ottimi dischi di hard n' heavy nella seconda metà degli anni ‘80, che si ponevano giusto a metà strada tra l'hard rock dei connazionali Scorpions e l'hair metal dei gruppi d'oltreoceano, tentano con questo "Knock Out" la definitiva scalata al successo. Reduci dall'ottimo "Point Blank", che ottenne ottimi riscontri sia nel Vecchio che nel Nuovo Continente, e permise loro di condurre un tour a supporto dei Judas Priest di "Ram It Down", i Bonfire tendono in questo disco a smussare gli angoli del loro hard rock, virando verso canzoni meno elaborate e sempre più alla ricerca del ritornello vincente; non mancano ovviamente le ballate, più numerose rispetto ai dischi precedenti e più tendenti al maistream e al radiofonico.
Ma la qualità delle song rimane comunque medio/alta, e i vari pezzi si prestano all'ascolto sempre con piacere, inziando dall'opener "Streets Of Freedom", una delle più riuscite del lotto, dall'intro acustico che va ben presto a sfociare in un riff roccioso, con il chitarrista Angel Schleifer che riesce a toccare le corde giuste, anche il ritornello è sicuramente coinvolgente e trascinante; non la stessa cosa posso dire per la successiva "The Stroke", cover di Billy Squier che fu scelta anche come singolo, pezzo che non mi ha mai entusiasmato; ma per fortuna la successiva "Dirty Love" risulta migliore con il suo mid tempo in cui spunta un ritornello un po' scontato ma comunque riuscito. Rallentano i ritmi dell'album per lasciare spazio alle ballads, apre "Rivers Of Glory" ballata pianistica che mi ha ricordato alcune cose dei Manowar (nello specifico "Courage"), che colpisce dritta al cuore per il canto sommesso di Lessman e il suo andamento colmo di tristezza e passione; mentre "Home Babe" presenta sonorità più radiofoniche ma è un bel pezzo molto coinvolgente e solare.
E sono nuovamente i mid tempo a prevalere con le successive "Shake Down", "Hold You" , "Down And Out" , e "All We Got", tutte canzoni molto piacevoli e orecchiabili, anche se non brillano per originalità e si discostano poco dai canoni tipici dell'hard rock di quel periodo, è in particolare è "Hold You" a risultare più riuscita con un ritornello davvero trascinante; mentre giunti alla fine del disco sono nuovamente le ballads a riaffacciarsi, nello specifico con la più ritmata ma convincente "Take My Heart And Run", e la penultima " Fight For Love", gioiello acustico e delicato che è anche una delle cose migliori presenti in questo full lenght. Chiude la strana "Tonmeister", ad un primo ascolto visti i suoi 9 minuti di durata mi sarei magari aspettato un bel pezzo più elaborato che i Bonfire non avevano mai scritto fino a quel punto della loro carriera; ma invece siamo di fronte ad una composizione in cui di musica c'è ben poco, infatti è una specie di sketch con voci in tedesco spezzato ogni tanto da qualche riff di Schleifer; già nel precendente "Point Blank" i Bonfire ci avevano abituato a qualche intermezzo divertente, ma 9 minuti mi sembrano un ‘esagerazione di cui sinceramente non si sentiva il bisogno.
"Knock Out" finisce qui, e sarà anche l'ultimo lavoro dei Bonfire intesi come formazione classica, infatti dopo il clamoroso insuccesso dell'album la band optò per lo scioglimento, spazzata via dall'ondata grunge e dai rinnovati gusti del pubblico e delle major discografiche; anche se Clauss Lessman rifondò la band quattro anni dopo insieme al chitarrista Hans Ziller, membro originario del gruppo ma non presente nei lavori più famosi, gruppo che continua a sfornare dischi anche al giorno d'oggi (l'ultimo, "The Rauber" è del 2008) ma che per ora non ho ascoltato. Un ascolto consiglio invece di darlo ai vecchi Bonfire, quelli di "Don't Touch The Light", di "Fireworks " e di "Point Blank", quelli si che erano una grande band.
