I Boston. Una band che tanto ha dato ai fans, e non solo, ma che tanto si è anche presa. Che poi parlare di band è alquanto riduttivo, visto che probabilmente ormai neanche Tom Scholtz ricorda più quanti session man si sono avvicendati durante la registrazione dei suoi dischi. I Boston erano appunto, se anche volessimo considerare il guitarist Barry Goudreau, in compagnia di Scholz fin da prima degli esordi, due persone, anzi forse alla fine neanche: Tom Scholtz, chitarrista, tecnico del suono e produttore e songwriter, e il cantante Brad Delp, che possedeva una delle voci più belle ed intense che si siano mai potute ascoltare.
Nel 1976, all'indomani del clamoroso successo dell'hit "More Than A Feeling" e dell'uscita del primo album omonimo, forse neanche i Boston stessi si aspettavano il tipo di carriera che li avrebbe aspettati. Una carriera completamente subordinata al volere di Mr. Scholtz, più preoccupato sicuramente di trovare la produzione perfetta e la veste più splendente per le sue canzoni, più che dell'affetto dei fans, e delle loro aspirazioni, che dai Boston si aspettavano una carriera diversa, normale. Forse lo stesso Brad Delp lo immaginava, e anzi, ripensandoci oggi, direi che lo avrebbe sicuramente meritato.
Ma purtroppo le cose non andarono così, e dopo l'uscita del secondo album "Don't Look Back", nel 1978, iniziarono a farsi evidenti le tensioni tra la band e la casa discografica, la CBS, e tra i membri della band stessi. E infatti gli anni tra il 1978 e il 1985 verrano ricordati solo per le molteplici cause che Tom Scholtz dovette sostenere contro tutto e tutti, nel mentre lavorava a nuovo album dei Boston, album che venne pubblicato, dopo 8 anni di faticosa gestazione, nel 1986.
E' rimasto solo Brad Delp, della formazione originale, a fianco di Scholtz, ma almeno per lui gli anni non sembrano essere passati, il tempo sembra essersi fermato. L'album,come negli intenti, è studiato per essere un concept sul tema della "terzà età", vista però non tanto come l'età della vecchiaia, quanto come quella in cui l'uomo deve prendere coscienza di quello che vuole costruire nella vita, e fare le sue scelte difficili e decisive per andare avanti. E un po' tutti i testi delle canzoni si ritrovano questi temi, per esempio "You, you and I, girl; we can share a life together, It's now or never, and tomorrow may be too late" (da "Amanda"), passando per "My destination is by your side, right by your side" (da "My Destination"), o "What does It takes to be a man?" (da "To Be A Man"), o ancora "Can'tcha say you believe in me? Can't you see what you means to me? Don't leave me alone tonight, 'cause I still love you." (da "Can'tcha say (You believe in me)") per finire con "You and I we were there to see the dawn, side by side we had love to carry on", da "Hollyann".
Musicalmente, si nota come i toni si siano un pò abbassati rispetto ai due album dei Seventies, cosa anche fisiolgica, dato che i tempi sono ormai cambiati, e le canzoni virano verso un AOR patinato e di lusso, lasciando da parte le reminescenze hard del passato, con la produzione di Scholtz ovviamente curatissima in ogni minimo particolare, sicuramente avanti anni luce rispetto ai tempi. In apertura troviamo subito il singolo che riportò nella scena il nome dei Boston dopo anni e anni di silenzio, quella "Amanda", che è uno dei tanti lenti del disco ed è assolutamente perfetta, in quanto a romanticismo, carica e trasporto. Non manca poi "Amanda N.2" , ovvero "My Destination", altra ballata che riporta praticamente la stessa stofa dell'opener, che non si distinguerebbe certo per originalità, se non fosse letteralmente presa in mano e salvata da Delp, che nel secondo ritornello colpisce dritto al cuore toccando il cielo con la sua voce angelica e meravigliosa. Due brani strumentali, la sperimentale e futuristica "The Launch" e la brevissima "A New World", seguono i due episodi più rock dell'album, le divertenti e coinvolgenti "We're Ready" e , soprattutto "Cool The Engines"; rockeggiante, anche se un po' più cromata e pop, risulta essere anche "I Think I Like" altro brano riuscito e facilmente ricordabile. Dopo la profonda e introspettiva "To Be A Man", arrivano quelli che sono forse i brani più riusciti del disco, "Cantcha Say (You Believe in Me)/Still In Love", è una dolce ballata che colpisce per il canto a tratti sommesso e a tratti più allegro, soprattutto nei cori; è la classica canzone d'amore dal testo strappalacrime, che però riesce ad evitare la banalità in cui cadono molte songs del genere, grazie all'interpretazione molto sentita e profonda di Delp e all'intermezzo strumentale di Scholz, inserito prima dell'ultimo ritornello, che regala emozioni bellissime con la sua melodia dolcissima, sognante e indimenticabile, prima che si inserisca la voce di Delp a chiudere il pezzo, con la sua voce intrisa di una passione e di un romanticismo unico; e poi "Hollyann" che chiude il disco e mi sento di dire anche la carriera dei Boston, visto che è anche l'ultima prestazione da studio di Brad Delp (se escludiamo qualche partecipazione nell'ultimo "Corporate America"). E comunque dicevo, "Hollyann".
Potrei anche non dire niente e fermarmi qui, e lasciare che sia la musica a parlare e ad esprimere le sensazioni e le emozioni che evoca questo pezzo. L'intensità unica della voce di Delp, unita al crescendo che porta la canzone dalle strofe calme e rilassate a sfociare in un ritornello epico e magnifico, dove le chitarre piene ed inebrianti di Scholtz vengono superate e messe in secondo piano dagli acuti magici del cantante, che raggiunge vette indescrivibili in quanto a passione ed intensità. Dolcissima e tristissima allo stesso tempo, è da lacrime e da brividi ad ogni ascolto.
E cala il silenzio. Tom Scholtz si, continuerà, producendo altri due dischi, ovviamente con i classici 8 anni di distanza, anche se per forza di cose il successo (e neanche la qualità) sarà mai più la stessa. Cala il silenzio, anche e soprattutto, su Brad Delp. Un silenzio fatto di tristezza e di dolore, di rassegnazione. Come tutti saprete Brad Delp non c'è più, ormai da 3 anni, è morto nel 2007, suicidandosi, lasciando scritto in un biglietto che si sentiva solo.
Capita di sentirsi soli. E non è mai facile. Ma ogni volta che sento "A Man I'll Never Be", o "Hollyann", io mi sento un po' meno solo. E di questo ti ringrazio, Mr. Delp. E credo di non essere il solo.
